I'm using KDE 4.13.0. Akonadi Server is using an internal MySQL server, but Test 5 in the Akonadi Server Self-Test Report shows a well-known error:

Code:

When I had this problem some years ago with previous versions of MySQL and Akonadi using an external MySQL server, I was able to run the following command which fixed it:

Code:
$ mysql_install_db --datadir=/home/fitzcarraldo/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ --basedir=/usr

However now I get the following when I run that command:

Code:
$ mysql_install_db --datadir=/home/fitzcarraldo/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ --basedir=/usr
bash: mysql_install_db: command not found
$ /usr/share/mysql/scripts/mysql_install_db --datadir=/home/fitzcarraldo/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ --basedir=/usr
chown: changing ownership of ‘/home/fitzcarraldo/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/’: Operation not permitted
Cannot change ownership of the database directories to the 'mysql'
user.  Check that you have the necessary permissions and try again.

I have tried changing the permissions but mysql_install_db aborts. Running it as root does not help either.

I have also tried the other fixes given in http://wikisandbox.kde.org/Akonadi_4.4/Troubleshooting under the section Table 'mysql. servers' doesn't exist but they don't help. Uncommenting the line "sql_mode=strict_trans_tables" makes no difference, and uncommenting instead the line "sql_mode=strict_trans_tables,strict_all_tables,strict_error_for_division_by_zero,..." prevents Akonadi Server from running at all.

Is anyone running KDE 4.13.0 with Akonadi Server using an internal MySQL server and not getting errors in Akonadi Server Test 5? If so, how do you manage to do that?!

If I delete the directories /home/fitzcarraldo/.local/share/akonadi/ and /home/fitzcarraldo/.config/akonadi/ then Akonadi recreates them from scratch when I use the command akonadictl start, but still exhibits the same problem in Test 5. I think there must be bug or an incompatibility between Akonadi Server 1.12.1 and MySQL 5.5.32.

Code:
$ akonadictl status
Akonadi Control: running
Akonadi Server: running

By the way, some sites specify to copy /usr/share/config/akonadi/mysql-global.conf to /home/fitzcarraldo/.config/akonadi/mysql-local.conf and edit the latter. However, I can get rid of the "InnoDB memory heap is disabled" message by editing the file /home/fitzcarraldo/.local/share/akonadi/mysql.conf and adding the following line:

Code:
innodb_use_sys_malloc=0

but adding the above line to /home/fitzcarraldo/.config/akonadi/mysql-local.conf instead does not get rid of the "InnoDB memory heap is disabled" message.

OK, I got it working in the end, but I'm not sure precisely how, so I'd still be interested to hear from someone who could tell me the correct procedure to follow.

Anyway, below I list what I did as far as I can remember:

Code:
# chmod 775 /var/lib/mysql/akonadi/

(I think the above directory is just the legacy of a previous attempt of mine to create an external MySQL server for Akonadi.)

EDIT: I can now confirm the above chmod command was a red herring. That directory was indeed left over from my previous attempt at setting up an external MySQL server for Akonadi. I found out by uninstalling MySQL and Akonadi, and reinstalling them, and the above-mentioned akonadi sub-directory was no longer present. Everything below is still applicable; I could reproduce it to create from scratch a fresh internal MySQL server for Akonadi which, as far as I can tell, is working correctly.

Code:
$ /usr/share/mysql/scripts/mysql_install_db --datadir=${HOME}/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ --basedir=/usr
chown: changing ownership of ‘/home/fitzcarraldo/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/’: Operation not permitted
Cannot change ownership of the database directories to the 'mysql'
user.  Check that you have the necessary permissions and try again.

Code:
$ /usr/share/mysql/scripts/mysql_install_db --datadir=${HOME}/.local/share/akonadi/db_data/ --basedir=/usr --user=fitzcarraldo

OK

To start mysqld at boot time you have to copy
support-files/mysql.server to the right place for your system

PLEASE REMEMBER TO SET A PASSWORD FOR THE MySQL root USER !
To do so, start the server, then issue the following commands:

/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root password 'new-password'
/usr/bin/mysqladmin -u root -h meshedgedx password 'new-password'

Alternatively you can run:
/usr/bin/mysql_secure_installation

which will also give you the option of removing the test
databases and anonymous user created by default.  This is
strongly recommended for production servers.

See the manual for more instructions.

You can start the MySQL daemon with:
cd /usr ; /usr/bin/mysqld_safe &

You can test the MySQL daemon with mysql-test-run.pl
cd /usr/mysql-test ; perl mysql-test-run.pl

Please report any problems with the /usr/scripts/mysqlbug script!

Then I deleted the old log files before running the Akonadi Server Test via the GUI, just so that the report would not produce any error messages for Tests 15 and 17:

Code:
$ rm /home/fitzcarraldo/.local/share/akonadi/akonadiserver.error.old
$ rm /home/fitzcarraldo/.local/share/akonadi/akonadi_control.error

And here is the report:
