|
|
Hi, I have installed Steam using the DEB method and it starts with no problems, but when I run it, its really slow and takes 90% CPU Usage, scrolling, chatting and navigating all are very slow., tried running it using root but that didn't help.
Running a JAVA game is also really slow, JAVA uses up to 98% of CPU. (Tested PokeMMO and Minecraft)
I first thought it was that I forgot to enable hyperthreading in the kernel, but I rechecked and it was enabled.
Here are my specs:
-Intel Pentium 4 650 3.40 GHz
-4GB of DDR3 RAM
-AMD Radeon 7750 1 GB GDDR5
-Power supply 550W
-XFCE4 for Desktop Environment
All of those games run perfectly on Windows 7, so I think the problem is with my Gentoo installation.
Best,

Tried that method too. What about the other game? I think there is a general problem causing these slowdowns. |

Just some tired, quick thoughts:
Anything interesting when you run it from a terminal?
Have you tried running the same applications via Wine?
I don't have either games you mention. Have you any other games so I could compare/troubleshoot more? _________________ Kindest of regardses. |

That's really totally unrelated.
I won't recommend to use the steam-overlay since they have hacked on system libraries in the past (e.g. uncoordinated multilib conversions) without discussing any of that with any of us.
Before going further down the assumption line. Have you tried running native games? E.g. warsow, xonotic or similar. |

Are you using the proprietary driver or the built in X driver? You need proprietary driver for Steam or any other 3D game or 3D app to work correctly.
However, I think the real question is why are you using a AMD Radeon 7750 on a Pentium 4!? The Pentium 4 is causing a severe bottleneck for that GPU, the GPU is intended for the Intel Core i3, i5, or i7 series or whatever line of AMD cpu's came out at around the time that GPU was released.
Anyways, start Steam from within a command line terminal from your DE and see if that shows any errors or missing libs which may be clues to what is causing the performance issue.
Also the other issue could be, if you're using the proprietary driver, the AMD Radeon drivers themselves, it's well documented at how bad the AMD drivers are for Linux [which is entirely AMD's fault, not Linux]. However they DO perform better than the open source drivers do.
[The same goes for Nvidia GPU's as well, proprietary drivers are a must if you're gaming on Linux. Because nouveau, regardless of what the FOSS activists claim, really does indeed suck for anything but 2D]. _________________ Linux. Freedom. Power. |
