Amazing.
But that may have not have helped either. The startx for the openbox,
installed as the guide says, does start X, but neither the mouse nor the
keyboard show any signs of life, the monitor is black with just the mouse
pointer in the center of the screen, if startx run as normal user, but shows
up a few xterms and freezes if run as root.
I can, however, kill the X via ssh, because all appears to be working inside,
