EDIT START Sat Apr 19 16:30:36 BST 2014
This thread will be better understood if I were to say upfront that I added this line only before installing X
EDIT END

No line:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
in /etc/portage/make.conf

Code:

mybox ~ # emerge -p x11-base/xorg-drivers

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies                   ... done!
[ebuild   R    ] x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.15  INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse -acecad -aiptek -elographics -fpit -hyperpen -joystick -mutouch -penmount -synaptics -tslib -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon vesa -apm -ast -chips -cirrus -dummy -epson -fbdev -fglrx (-freedreno) (-geode) -glint -i128 (-i740) -intel -mach64 -mga -modesetting -neomagic -nouveau -nv (-nvidia) (-omap) (-omapfb) -qxl -r128 -radeonsi -rendition -s3virge -savage -siliconmotion -sisusb (-sunbw2) (-suncg14) (-suncg3) (-suncg6) (-sunffb) (-sunleo) (-suntcx) -tdfx -tga -trident -tseng -v4l -via -virtualbox -vmware (-voodoo)" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

mybox ~ #

Change, line:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
in /etc/portage/make.conf

[ a note due here: emerge -qtDN world would say "Nothing to emerge" prior to
that line added ]

Code:

mybox ~ # emerge -qtDN world
[ebuild   R   ] x11-base/xorg-drivers-1.15  INPUT_DEVICES="evdev -acecad -aiptek -elographics -fpit -hyperpen -joystick -keyboard* -mouse* -mutouch -penmount -synaptics -tslib -vmmouse -void -wacom" VIDEO_CARDS="radeon vesa -apm -ast -chips -cirrus -dummy
-epson -fbdev -fglrx (-freedreno) (-geode) -glint -i128 (-i740) -intel -mach64 -mga -modesetting -neomagic -nouveau -nv (-nvidia) (-omap) (-omapfb) -qxl -r128 -radeonsi -rendition -s3virge -savage -siliconmotion -sisusb (-sunbw2) (-suncg14) (-suncg3) (-suncg6) (-sunffb) (-sunleo) (-suntcx) -tdfx -tga -trident -tseng -v4l -via -virtualbox -vmware (-voodoo)"

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]
mybox ~ #

The principal difference, unless I am still wrong (couldn't get X to load in a
day or two, lots of tries), is:

Code:

INPUT_DEVICES="evdev keyboard mouse ...[snip]..."

before adding the line INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" in make.conf,

and:

Code:

INPUT_DEVICES="evdev -mouse*  ...[snip]...  -keyboard* ...[snip]..."

after adding the line INPUT_DEVICES="evdev" in make.conf.

Amazing.

But that may have not have helped either. The startx for the openbox,
installed as the guide says, does start X, but neither the mouse nor the
keyboard show any signs of life, the monitor is black with just the mouse
pointer in the center of the screen, if startx run as normal user, but shows
up a few xterms and freezes if run as root.

I can, however, kill the X via ssh, because all appears to be working inside,
nothing is broken in the system, just the

After having read the relevent
guides on wiki.gentoo.org and wiki.x.org I'm now even doing an emerge -e (less
that 400 packages, maybe worth trying).

What the hardware is, and confs, can be found out from the logs/stout, now.

So dmesg apparently doesn't even encounter any problems. Amazing!
And yet, after all the tries (too many to say), no X, well frozen X which
never even knows what is wrong...

The Radeon Northern Islands in question is:

Code:

mybox log # lspci | grep VGA

mybox log #

And it's not the card that's faulty. Have two same model, replaced one with
the other, and both have the same issues.

The linux-firmware is done by savedconfig use flag, and not much is left
uncommented:

Code:

mybox ~ # cat /etc/portage/savedconfig/sys-kernel/linux-firmware-20131230 | grep

All by the book unless I tried to grasp something faster then I really could
and it slipped my attention (possible).

But, I recompiled the kernel, and before posting this, will try and reboot yet
another one time...

Rebooted. (Just to say, framebuffer works fine.)

No luck. But the X isn't getting. She doesn't even know she doesn't work. I
mean, this shows when I kill the /usr/bin/openbox process after I log in from
anothe computer,

Other than the backtrace that I get with the X -configure that I gave close to
the beginning of the post, there I see no other clues...

On a sidenote.
If I:
mybox log # cat messages
... the file is shown OK ...
But:
mybox log # grep TURKS messages
Binary file messages matches
mybox log # cat messages

Amazing! Well I thought I can still do it via cat'ing it, but:
mybox log # cat messages | grep TURKS
Binary file (standard input) matches
mybox log #

How do it get the /var/log/messages to cat normally?
So to see if there's anything to find related to no-X issue, I removed the
blob that's in the beginning of the /var/log/messages, and saved it appart...

And I see nothing out of the ordinary in the lines in messages that were
written in this most recent try of mine to start the X:

the wiki for xorg: https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Configuration

please make sure that you have install the xorg-server successfully!
then do these steps to check the xorg-server ok or not:
1) emerge twm xterm as root
2) swich user as non-root user, startx
3) if only black screen displayed, then tweaking X settings following the wiki
4) if all ok, emerge --unmerge twm xterm as root
ps: donot start x using root user!

hope this is helpful for you!

X is now loading OK.

It was just the missing USE flag.
Guess which one?

Here's some help:
Compilation error during emerge
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-980864.html

I had the same issue as well. The missing /dev/fd symlink to /proc/self/fd
And the X couldn't see because the devices weren't there really or weren't really configured for X. Which duty is it? In the default openrc, with only little systemd in it (I'm not an expert, can't speak clean tech terms here, sorry).

I mean in the default installation by the book (my stage3 being hardened doesn't change the circumstances as far as this X problem.

And that exact USE flag should be put a note about into the Handbook, let me see, and than come back with the exact link, as well as the answer on which flag we're talking here...

Just before:
http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?full=1#book_part1_chap6__chap3

which is actually at the end of:

http://www.gentoo.org/doc/en/handbook/handbook-amd64.xml?full=1#book_part1_chap6__chap2_sect5

there could be places an example that would include:
INPUT_DEVICES="evdev"
and a warning that problems somewhat difficult to identify (in the link there are some advanced users that didn't get the reason right away) if that kind of USE flag (P.S. well it's not strictly a USE flag, but I already wrote these paragraph, so...) is not in place.
I also added policykit consolekit and dbus USE flags.

IMPORTANT in my case, and I'll put it next, somewhere clear on top of the thread (it didn't look inportant to me then, I see it is important only now), I only after basically having installed almost all of the system up unto the point of installing X and openbox, added that evdev USE flag into the make.conf.

That was too late, and couldn't anymore work, at least I don't know how to get it to work.

Instead what I did, is, I completely reinstall the system from scratch, amply using the dd-dump backups of the system partitions (boot, /boot and root, /, only), where surely I used my research of installing offline that I gave the link to in the first post, but this time, the USE flags were there right from the start.

I hope this helps!

Thanx, kenmux, pls. note the times, I don't get it because it
says for you:

and for me:
PostPosted: Sat Apr 19, 2014 4:15 pm,

but I know I looked up, and didn't see any post of yours before posting.
Sorry! It must be my long times offline while reading pages, and then assuming
things haven't changed, while they did, in the meantime.

But anyways, that wasn't really the issue.

Thanks for caring. Cheers!
