Hi,

After new installation of gentoo with gnome/systemd -
Starting gdm and login but after few minutes all main-menu's icons had been erased and only the frame remained.
I had faced this problem during a previous installation, but I thought it has to do to the bad HDD -
now after replacing HDD and new installation it happens again - Someone else has experienced such problem?
Is gnome/systemd a stable DE? How to repair it?
In addition: During the starting of gnome there is a black screen - How to add a welcome screen?

Anything in the log?
Code:

journalctl

I did have it happen to me one time, but it went away after I;
Code:

emerge -avuND world

And then
Code:

emerge @preserved-rebuild

Comprookie2000 Hi,

At the moment I am trying to do what you suggested and hope it will work it out,
however, I found the attached similar topic, and I do not know how and where exactly to add this $XDG_MENU_PREFIX?
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-966188-start-0.html

Please advise!

Thanks

$XDG_MENU_PREFIX should be set up by /etc/X11/xinit/xinitrc.d/15-xdg-data-gnome. It should be set up by emerging gnome-base/gnome-session.

Dear Comprookie2000,

I have done your suggestion and by now it seems that it solved the problem -
I hope it will last at least the time I will last ... :D

Now I have another problem (do not know if it has to do with the previous one) -
Firefox crashes very often...

Dear Jburns,

I found out that gnome-session is alreday installed - I emerged gnome - the full package - Probably it is included.
Here is the relevant file that you noted - I hope it is ok:
Code:

#!/bin/sh

if [ "$DESKTOP_SESSION" = "gnome" -o "$DESKTOP_SESSION" = "cinnamon" ]; then
   if [ -z "$XDG_DATA_DIRS" ]; then
      export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/gnome:/usr/local/share/:/usr/share/
   else
      export XDG_DATA_DIRS=/usr/share/gnome:"$XDG_DATA_DIRS"
   fi
fi

Thanks you all

I also had problems with firefox crashing. Are you using the nvidia driver?

When you post your reply give as much information as you can. The versions you are using, emerge -pv any and all error messages. Run the program from the terminal and paste the output in your reply.

Dear Comprookie2000,

I am not using nvidia - it is on board... I think of Intel.
EDIT: If FIREFOX is crashing, what do you recommend instead? With KDE RC FireFox working nice but I prefer Gnome...
I would prefer browser with translation add-on - I like Semaonkey but can not add-on due to new version...

Sorry, I am quite Gentoo's beginner - I can not 'emerge -pv any' - Is it the right command?
Or maybe I need to install it before?

Versions - I am trying my best - can not find out gnome version, but It was installed yesterday and I am working with systemd:

Code:
 uname -r
3.12.13-gentoo

Code:

[I] sys-apps/portage
     Available versions:  [M]2.1.6.7_p1 2.1.12.2 2.2.1 2.2.7 2.2.8-r1 ~2.2.10 **9999 {build doc epydoc +ipc less pypy pypy2_0 python2 python3 selinux xattr LINGUAS="pl ru" PYTHON_TARGETS="pypy pypy2_0 python2_6 python2_7 python3_2 python3_3 python3_4"}
     Installed versions:  2.2.8-r1(07:43:39 AM 04/03/2014)(ipc -build -doc -epydoc -pypy2_0 -python2 -python3 -selinux -xattr LINGUAS="-ru" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 python3_3 -pypy2_0 -python2_6 -python3_2 -python3_4")
     Homepage:            http://www.gentoo.org/proj/en/portage/index.xml
     Description:         Portage is the package management and distribution system for Gentoo

Here is the last part of journalctl with some 'failed' messages - If more info is needed please let me know how to do it.
Thanks

Hi pman :)
For the emerge -pv here is an example with the program you can install to get rid of all those ModemManger errors in your log.
Code:

 # emerge -pv  net-misc/modemmanager

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] net-misc/modemmanager-1.0.0-r2:0/1  USE="policykit qmi -qmi-newest {-test}" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

But if we just install it then we would be doing it wrong. Its really part of a use flag for networkmanager;
Code:

# emerge -pv networkmanager

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] net-misc/networkmanager-0.9.8.8  USE="bluetooth dhcpcd introspection modemmanager nss ppp systemd wext wifi -avahi -connection-sharing (-consolekit) -dhclient -gnutls -resolvconf {-test} -vala" 0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

So what we want to do is add modemmanager to our use flags. I like to use ufed for this;
Code:

# emerge -pv ufed

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild   R    ] app-portage/ufed-0.40.2-r1  0 kB

Total: 1 package (1 reinstall), Size of downloads: 0 kB

Then as root run ufed from a terminal and if you enter modemmanger it will go down to that even before you get done typing it. Then select it and press enter to save.

For firefox I use the Mozilla Firefox ESR
Thats the stable extended support version. To do that I add a higher versions to package mask.
Code:

echo ">=www-client/firefox-25" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

For the icons lets try this;
Open gnome-tweek-tool
Code:

~ $ gnome-tweak-tool

Go to Appearence and select Gnome under Icons. Restart your session and see if this helps.

Dear Comprookie2000,

I can feel that you are thinking well (sorry for the compliment.. :D),
however I do not understand deeply what you wrote (please remember - I am new in town...) -
I understand from your post that we need to add modemmanager to our USE flags -
so why not to just add it to /etc/portage/make.conf (please do not laugh loudly if it is ...).
In addition, I do not get this:
Quote:
But if we just install it then we would be doing it wrong. Its really part of a use flag for networkmanager;
Code:

I already have installed networkmanager - so modemmanager's use flag suppose to be already - not?

OK - I emerged ufed and add modemmanager as you described nicely. This suppose to solve the menu's icons problem?

I opened gnome-tweak-tool and found out that Gnome was already selected under icons.

Sorry for my confusion, however, I think that after I will really understand what you wrote in this post,
I will manage much better with Gentoo!

EDIT: After done the below masking - How to activate this change? By emerge world or something else?
Quote:
echo ">=www-client/firefox-25" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

Thanks

Yes go ahead and update world;
Code:
 emerge -uND world

I had you add modemmanger to networkmanager to get rid of the spam in your logs;
"Activation via systemd failed for unit 'dbus-org.freedesktop.ModemManager1.service"

I would logout and back in and post the logs again so we can see if we can figure out why the icons disappear.

Dear Comprookie2000,

OK - Now I figure out why did you ask me to do it.

I emerged -uND world, logout and login again - so far the icons are ok,
so I do not know if journalctl can help us. Anyway I put here its output -
still there are modemmanager failed messages.

Regarding firefox: I have done the masking and emerge -uND world -
But do not know how to install Mozilla Firefox ESR?

Thanks

Comprookie2000 Hi,

The icons disappeared again and here is journalctl output - I hope it will help - I see lines like:
'failed for unit 'dbus-org.bluez.service' and 'libcolord-WARNING **: lcms2(profile): Failed with error: Corrupted tag 'meta' [12]'
'dbus-org.freedesktop.Avahi.service': Unit dbus-org.freedesktop.Avahi.service failed to load: No such file or directory.':
BTW - I do no know if all the text was copied - the lines are large - maybe there is another way to copy the full text?
Thanks

I got precisely the same problem with gnome3.
In march I've update my good old gnome-2.32 to gnome-3.10… and get only unusable desktop environnment :
gnome-shell is loosing all its icon and text menus ; while cinnamon get no mouse pointer :-).

I wonder if it could be related to GPU and GPU drivers. Since pmam mentionned using an integrated GPU, and I'm also using one.
Code:

# lspci |grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82G33/G31 Express Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

Dear Pma,

First of all it is nice to know that I am not alone in the world facing this problem -
Now I am relax a little-beat... And we have almost the same user name .. a cosmic co-accident :D .

It is really suspicions to find out that I have VGA very similar to yours:

Code:
 lspci |grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 82945G/GZ Integrated Graphics Controller (rev 02)

I hope it will be a good starter of solving this issue!

Thanks

Hi,

After I saw Pma's post that pointed out to the Intel on-board GPU,
I decided to add nVidia card (and changed the kernel configuration respectively) instead of the on-board -
Yes, now it is OK and menu's icons not going anywhere... :)
So far Gnome/systemd working very nice and FireFox working smoothly without any crashing!
I think that this fact can be helpful for the developers – As far as I know (and it is not much...),
on-board GPU using the system's RAM memory, (nVidia has a memory of its own) -
So maybe there is a conflict with the operating system - or you have a better idea to solve this issue...
Hope developers pay attention to this problem – I assume that not just Pma and me have faced this problem –
Intel on-board GPU is very popular, so probably many users have faced this issue that caused them to give up with Gnome3 or Systemd!
If some additional testing and data are needed please let me know!
