I only see the alt attributes on images on web pages. I can open an image by itself and it shows up just fine. This happens on both Firefox 24.4 and 28.0. I also tried firefox-bin 24.4 with the same result.
Doing a revdep-rebuild shows some custom-built packages in /usr/local having some bad links, but nothing for Firefox.

Edit->Preferences->Content->Autoload pictures
Something like that, i'm not running an english version. |

Didn't see that option anymore, but it did get me on the right track. According to this:
https://support.mozilla.org/en-US/questions/968486
That option was removed in Firefox 23. It can be set manually in about:config with the key permissions.default.image (set to 1 to enable it).
Not sure how that got changed in my setup, but it works now. Thanks! |
