OK- did the test. Weird result (output below). Also got an immediate error dialog box after typing "y," but after I clicked OK in it to dismiss it, the xxdiff gui appeared, as normal, and functions. Here's what the error dialog box said:

"Could not read network connection list

What about putting xhost +localhost on /home/wrc/.bashrc, since I'm still user when I type it? I really know very little about these basic things. Could I have a basic flaw in that this "dcopserver" isn't running when it should be at boot, and is it essentially a kde problem?

Sorry,
I did type xhost +localhost, but in previous post I didn't copy/paste correctly and top 2 lines in the output didn't show up- it actually is:

wrc@mymachine wrc $ xhost +localhost
localhost being added to access control list
wrc@mymachine wrc $ su
Password:
root@mymachine wrc # perl cfg-update -i

OK- put xhost +localhost at bottom of my /home/wrc/.bashrc file, and it worked, in that I didn't have to type it when I opened xterm- it had already done it, as below. Then everything went as I described above. When I open an xterm, this appears:

localhost being added to access control list
wrc@mymachine wrc $

Then I just su and continue....

I'm looking at /home/wrc/.xsession-errors. This is an older one I saved (forgot exactly why) from 10/04/03, before I had messed with the cfg-update script.

Perhaps this is relevant info about a basic kde problem. I'm dreading having to reinstall and compile kde, if I need to.

Try this (as root):
"useradd test -g users -G audio,wheel,cron,portage -m -s /bin/bash"
"passwd test" (followed by the password for the new user)

(if necessary, change KDE so it doesn't autologin with user wrc on startup)
reboot and start KDE with user "test"
then open konsole
su to root
run "cfg-update -i"
Does it work when KDE is started by the new test user?

If you still have the same problem, you may have to emerge kde again.
But if it works with the test user, try removing all the files in /tmp
and renaming the .kde* directories in /home/wrc to something else.
This will destroy your KDE configuration for user wrc but KDE can recreate
these folders in /home/wrc on the next start and possibly fix the problem.
You will have to reconfigure KDE for user wrc if you go this route....

OK- I'll do this today. Sounds like a good plan, and I've done both things many times before, so it's no big deal. Shouldn't the user "test" show up in the kdm and I can boot into kde with him?

I have kde 3.1.4 on another box, but had that "small font problem with it, so I haven't upgraded from 3.1.3 on this box. Maybe it's time to go ahead and do that anyway.

If you have time, I'd like to know what you thought about those xsession errors- were they relevant?

Thanks,
wrc1944

OK- created the user test, booted into kde with kdm login manager, and tried cfg-update, as you instructed. Can't even get started. Output below. Looks like I'll need to emerge kde again, unless you have another idea.I'll await your thought before I do so.

Here's a thought- I'll hook up my other boxes, and see if I have the same problem- why didn't I think of that before! Then I'll know if it's me, or the installation itself.

Do you happen to know if they have solved that font problem with the 3.1.4 Gentoo version (didn't have it with Texstar's kde 3.1.4 in Mandrake, but do on my other Gentoo box)? I've looked over the forums, and can't find the answer to that question.

I still don't understand why I need to type "perl" before cfg-update -i to get any response.

test@mymachine test $ su
Password:
root@mymachine test # perl cfg-update -i
Can't open perl script "cfg-update": No such file or directory
root@mymachine test # cfg-update -i
bash: cfg-update: command not found
root@mymachine test #

I'm becoming more convinced this is a basic kde problem on this particular install.

Well, I think you have editted /root/.bashrc and included that last line,
but forgot to change /etc/skel/.bashrc too! So when you added user test
it copied /etc/skel/.bashrc to /home/test/.bashrc and now user test has
the same problem with setting up his environment...
Fix it with this:
"nano -w /etc/skel/.bashrc"
put that last line in...
"cp /etc/skel/.bashrc /home/test/.bashrc"

Having to type "perl cfg-update" probably means that the perl executable
isn't located in /usr/bin. Look at the first line of my script... That line enables
the shell to parse the script to /usr/bin/perl so you don't have to type perl
in front of it. You can simply create a link called /usr/bin/perl pointing to
the actual location of perl (if /usr/bin/perl doesn't exist)

I just changed to another box, and need to download xxdiff, and some other updates. This box has kde 3.1.4. It's basically set up the same way as the other 2 boxes (users, progs, etc). I looked at /home/wrc/.xsession-errors, and here's todays file- looks like I have problems on this box too. I'll try doing your entire routine for cfg-update, and see what happens. I must be making a mistake in my installations and/or get compiling errors. However, all progs seem to function fine- I'm just having problems with this script (at least so far)

I get some errors in the KDE error log too, nothing to worry about...
But I wouldn't ignore that warning about your hostname! Try to fix that first.
A quick google search gives me this:

I fixed it by going to the file /etc/hosts
Editing the file I put the name of my computer as an alias on the localhost.localdomain line. If you changed the name of your computer from localhost.localdomain, this may be the cause of your problem too.

OK- I've done the following, on the new box:
1. Placed cfg-update in /usr/local/bin, chmod 755
2. Created test & ._cfg0000_test files in /etc.
3. Created .Xdefaults file (with the line added), and added your line to .bashrc file in /etc/skel.
4. Added host +localhost line to /home/wrc/.bashrc file. (Should I also add it to the /etc/skel .bashrc?)
5. When I open xterm, and su, then after typing "y," the DCOP communications error box comes up again, same error as before. When I click OK, the error box is dismissed, and xxdiff comes up fine, as before.

Below is xterm output. The DCOP error is in one of my previous posts. On a reboot, exactly the same thing happens, but cfg-update now brings up xxdiff gui after a reboot, just like before the reboot! I'll look into the host thing- here's my etc/hosts file:

127.0.0.1 localhost

fe00::0 ip6-localnet
ff00::0 ip6-mcastprefix
ff02::1 ip6-allnodes
ff02::2 ip6-allrouters
ff02::3 ip6-allhosts
-----------------------------------------------------
How would I type out that alias- the name of my machine is, mymachine, as the Gentoo docs instructed. Have I made a mistake assigned the host name when I installed?

Any ideas on what's up with this DCOP weirdness- it can't be normal?

Just type mymachine behind localhost in /etc/hosts

Normally this is fixed if you shutdown KDE and then
manually remove all files from /tmp!
"rm -rf /tmp/*"
"rm -rf /tmp/.*"
and you could remove ~/.DCOP* files
"rm -rf /home/wrc/.DCOP*"
"rm -rf /root/.DCOP*"

xentric,
Sorry to keep asking what must be basic questions, but you are a wealth if great information.

OK- top line in my /etc/hosts file now looks like this:

127.0.0.1 localhost mymachine
Is this correct? (apparently so, because xsession.errors on a reboot now reads as below) No more "Can't get own hostname. Your system is severely misconfigured" I feel a little better now.
--------------------------------------------------------------
startkde: Starting up...
kbuildsycoca running...
mcop warning: user defined signal handler found for SIG_PIPE, overriding
DirFilterPlugin: New URL : file:/home/wrc
DirFilterPlugin: Current URL:
KFileMetainfo (plugins): Text file meta info plugin
KFileMetainfo (plugins): Lines: 6
KFileMetainfo (plugins): Words: 30
KFileMetainfo (plugins): Characters: 250
KFileMetainfo (plugins): fileFormat: UNIX
---------------------------------------------------------
After running the box an hour, checked xsession.errors again, and many many more errors like before have built up.
Is this normal, or do all these errors mean I still have major problems with kde and x?

ITEM 2- still get the DCOP error box when calling cfg-update:

I looked in /tmp, and there are many seeming important things in there, so I'm very apprehensive about just blindly removing them. I've read before this is not a good idea sometimes. Is this completely safe in this case?

wrc@mymachine wrc $ ls -a /tmp
. .X0-lock 0937780009 kde-root krusader.tmp mcop-root scrollkeeper-tempfile.0
.. .X11-unix 1667895244 kde-test ksocket-root mcop-test use.EJ7aEy
.ICE-unix .keep gconfd-wrc kde-wrc ksocket-wrc mcop-wrc use.qCxkS9
wrc@mymachine wrc $

If I delete the /home/wrc/DCOP items, are they recreated? I can't afford to make a drastic mistake on this box.

Thanks

Yes that should be fine!

I get such errors too... so I don't think they're something to worry about.

Not to wreck anything that's running, exit KDE first, then delete everything
in /tmp from the command line. Secondly, the directory is called /tmp for
a reason. All programs should not store important stuff in there as it is for
temporary stuff only... So it shouldn't give lasting problems. One or more
services may stop responding, but a restarting them or rebooting should
be enough to fix that.

Well, when you create a new user are those files there already or are they
created after using the account? I think it's perfectly safe to remove them
after stopping services who need them. So stop KDE first.

I wish I could figure out the source of your problem :(

On two boxes, I've got it down to the only "problem" now is the DCOP error box popping up, but after it is dismissed with "OK," cfg-update works great.I can live with that, but it's still a mystery that I'd prefer to understand.
The DCOP files in /home/wrc have always been there from the original install AFAIK, where I only created one user account.

Hmmmm.. Just tried to shut down kde by going to init3, and got this:

localhost being added to access control list
wrc@mymachine wrc $ su
Password:
root@mymachine wrc # init3
bash: init3: command not found
root@mymachine wrc #

In Mandrake, when I needed to get out of kde and/or x to perform some task, init3 worked fine- is Gentoo somehow different, or has a different command- I thought init3 was a generic linux command?

One more question: If stop kde, and then delete the contents of /tmp, which contain kde and x items which sound important, when I reboot is kde still going to function? That's my main worry- sure don't want to emerge kde and x again- took 24 hours last time.

Although it's probably too late to suggest this now, it might be a good idea to move part of this thread to a new one, given that the original thread was info about the new script, and this seems to be unrelated tech. support :) This is the 'documentation' forum after all, not one of the support forums.

Alternatively, we could ask a moderator to move this into a support forum and xentric could repost the important and updated stuff about his script back here in this forum. What do you think? This might be the better idea, since it's a chance to include only the relevant and important info on this script.

meowspeak,
I think that's a good idea too. This thread has wondered pretty far afield, mostly due to my noobness. I've learned a lot for sure- and it's probably helped some of those fearing etc-update. Thanks to xentric and others for all the help!

One last question. Am I supposed to have a .bashrc file actually in /root, in addition to the ones in /etc/skel and /home/wrc? I only have .bash_history in /root.

Also have identical DCOP files in /root like the ones in /home/wrc.
The ones in root say:
local/mymachine:/tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop3885-1066688736
3885
-------------------------------------------
In /home/wrc they say:
local/mymachine:/tmp/.ICE-unix/dcop3590-1066684320
3590

The files in /etc/skel should be in every user's home dir (and that includes /root for the root user)
Just copy it from /etc/skel to /root, maybe that fixes your DCOP problem for root :?:

Doesn't [ctrl]+[alt]+[backspace] shutdown KDE and drop you on the command line?
Hmm... I'm not sure how to change to runlevel 3, I'd try "init 3" or just shutdown KDE
and go to a virtual terminal with [alt]+[f2] login as root, and delete those .DCOP* files
while KDE is not running.

Now about this thread...
Yeah it kinda got outa hand and turned into a full blown support thing
If a moderator wants to take these unnecessary messages to a new thread in another section
of the Gentoo Forums, go right ahead! Maybe other users can benefit from what has been
discussed in the last 3 pages. So don't just delete it please...

xentric,
That solved the DCOP error box appearance!!!!

I copied the /etc/skel/.bashrc file to /root, and then when I call perl cfg-update -i, and answer "y," xxdiff pops up with NO DCOP ERROR BOX!

Many thanks for sticking with this- I'll bet not having that .bashrc not in root by default on the installation of Gentoo has caused many problems for many people with all kinds of programs and scripts.

BTW, the perl executable is indeed in /usr/bin, so I still don't know why I have to type perl cfg-update -i to run the script, but who cares at this point!

If /usr/bin/perl exists and /usr/bin is included in root's PATH, it *should*
simply work. Check your path with "env | grep ^PATH="

Ow... forgot to mention that version 1.0 is now available for donwload and
I'm working on creating an ebuild. Just go back to page 1 and download it!

I had to make a couple of changes:
- backups are now named *.oldcfg and *.newcfg because *.old and *.new
are commonly used. You can restore your old backups if you rename them
to the new format...
- changed -i option to -u for "update" and added -r for "restore"

Sorry for these inconvenient changes... won't do that again!

Thanks for the updates! I guess all this paid off in the end, as it appears all my problems have been solved, and by doing so, others will benefit.

On the perl mystery, here's my PATH:

wrc@mymachine wrc $ env | grep ^PATH=
PATH=/bin:/usr/bin:/usr/local/bin:/opt/bin:/usr/i686-pc-linux-gnu/gcc-bin/3.3:/usr/X11R6/bin:/opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.1/bin:/opt/blackdown-jdk-1.4.1/jre/bin:/usr/qt/3/bin:/usr/kde/3.1/bin
wrc@mymachine wrc $

Seems OK, and perl, perl5.80 (the executables), and the files perlbug, perlcc, perldl, perldoc, and perlivp exist in /usr/bin.

I just created /root/.Xdefaults ( only had it in /etc/skel before), and get the following output. After su, the "mymachine" as root is now shown in red, and it no longer says "root@mymachine wrc #" in green, as it used to (I have my xterm set to green on black). Still works the same (with root access). In any case, I still have to type perl cfg-update -i to open the script and xxdiff.

My pleasure :D

Now... about the perl thing: are you really sure you've made cfg-update
executable by doing this: "chmod 755 /usr/local/bin/cfg-update" as root?

Doing an "ls -al /usr/local/bin/cfg-update" should show these permissions:
Code:
-rwxr-xr-x    1 root    root     17935  Oct 21 03:15 /usr/local/bin/cfg-update

All I can say is that when I redownloaded cfg-update the second time to replace what I had thought might be a corrupted file, I must have forgotten to chmod 755. I was sure I did chmod, but apparently not, because now after doing it I don't need to type perl first, and the permissions are now correct. I must say, it's going through problems like this that really give one a clearer picture of how linux is actually working, and is well-worth the effort.

Thanks Again!
