after 1/10 seconds with
Code:
./googleearth-bin: symbol lookup error: /usr/lib/qt4/libQtWebKit.so.4: undefined symbol: _ZNK8QPainter16clipBoundingRectEv
Before I moved away the library libQtWebKit.so.4 from the path /opt/googleearth. Playing with LD_ILIBRARY_PATH by the way was unsuccessfully.

I'm wondering how to convince GE to show images. Any help ?

Unfortunately you should try to use the libqtwebkit4 that came with the binary package if it came with one. Not sure if you were trying to get away from it or not. And you sure it's using that one and not some other....

What libraries does that library need?

    libc.so.6 => /lib/libc.so.6
Googeling for _ZNK8QPainter16clipBoundingRectEv brought few pages with vague hints that that call is now inlined instead of exproted - or so -

toralf, did you ever try the fix for Panoramio photos given in Comment 9 of Gentoo Bugzilla Bug Report No. 490066?
