Hi guys

I recently bought a Samsung UE55F6170 TV (200Hz) and I connected my Zotac ZBox ID41 PLUS (nVidia graphics) over a HDMI cable to it. During start up, everything seems fine, i.e. Grub is displayed correctly and I can see the whole boot process (I didn't change anything on the resolution here and I don't use a FB or anything so I think it's a 640x480 resolution).
However, as soon as X/LXDE starts, I just see the upper left of the picture I should see. The same happens if I just use "startx" (it works perfectly with a standard monitor over DVI). Also, I think that the part I see is about the part of the whole 1920x1080 picture that matches the resolution of the resolution you have when starting Gentoo (I think 640x480 as said before ... I hope you understand what I mean, I'm not an native english speaker ;) ).

I looked over lots of threads but I couldn't find anything useful so far as the most problems concerning HDMI seem to be over/underscan related which I think is not the case here. I also tried several xorg.conf, with and without EDID an so on but it really didn't change anything. If I go down with the resolution to say 1024 I still only see the upper left part of the picture I should see. A DVI to HDMI cable would probably help but I'm not quite sure.

Anyone encountered a similar problem yet? I'd appreciate any help!

EDIT: I'm back to the configuration files I had at the beginning that worked with the Samsung monitor (i.e. one config file in the xorg.conf.d that basically says that I use nvidia, nothing else).

I noted that xinerama is used instead of xrandr ... see what my Xorg.0.log says ... could that be the problem?

I actually tried to set the resolution from 640x480 to 800x600 to 1024x768 and I think the picture didn't change at all, well if it did it's hard to notice ...

One more thing: could the HDMI cable be the problem? I've got one with integrated Ethernet ... don't know if that standard requires special HDMI connection?

EDIT: I tried the Ubuntu-CD and it works perfectly! HDMI cable and TV are not the problem it seems ...


FYI: just tried a different HDMI cable, didn't help either.
Also, I connected the monitor to DVI while still having the TV on HDMI. I tried using nvidia-settings to change resolution and stuff but that didn't work either ...
Last but not least, I started from a Gentoo LiveCD. Although the LiveCD has no X, it changes the resolution of the "terminal" to something higher than the usual 640x480 and that is displayed correctly ... so it seems that the connection between PC and TV seems to be fine. I'll try a LiveCD of ubuntu or something similar tomorrow so I can check if X from LiveCD works.

But still: no idea where the problem is...

Did some more testing: I changed drivers from nvidia to nouveau which lead to the screen fitting perfectly. however, nouveau has problems with HD movies which is why I want to use nvidia proprietary (it was the reason I changed to nvidia drivers in the first place as I used nouveau at the beginning).

two notes about nouveau/nvidia:

the code above is from xrandr. I noticed that while using the nouveau driver, there where only two outputs (one DVI and one HDMI, not two DVI and one HDMI as here with nvidia drivers).
Also, it says "886mm x 498mm" at HDMI-0. Is that supposed to be the dimensions of the TV? If so, that's way too small, as the diagonale is about 1397 mm and these two numbers would lead to a diagonale of about 1016 mm.

You see that I tried to set the display size to 1219 mm x 686 mm with this xorg.conf but it doesn't work, xrandr still comes up with the 886 mm x 498 mm...

If think if I can change that, the problem should be solved ...

well I was able to solve the problem in the end. i don't know why but my system seems to misunderstand the EDID from the TV (which cannot be wrong since it worked with nouveau and ubuntu LiveUSB).
However, this did the trick for me:

so the EDID informations are ignored and I defined the modes that I got over xrandr (which in turn are given from the EDID file)

seems to work! I hope I can save someone's time in the future with this! ;)
