I am running without xorg.conf. The X log shows quite some output about the savage driver, it looks fine, here a section:

I think the relevant part is:

why is this happening? out of range? it is strange... it used to work before I updated. I kow I won't get acceleration anymore with savage, but that's not an issue, first I want a full screen back! :)

thanks.

These are auto detected timings. Reminds me of the olden days. How spoiled we arae nowadays...

Anyway, those timings were always very "safe" so a lot more would work if you'd just enforce it.

Try googling for Xorg modelines

for example :

hmm, but shouldn't the internal LCD be easily detected, as it always was? I did not mess around with modelines since CRT days!
I have no clue about what refresh rate it should have!

that said, I put inan xorg.conf file and added:
Code:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier   "Monitor0"
        VendorName   "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName    "Monitor Model"
        Modeline     "1024x768_75.00" 81.80 1024 1080 1192 1360 768 769 772 802 -HSync +Vsync
        Option       "PreferredMode" "1280x1024_75.00"
EndSection

it does not seem to do anything.

Does your xorg.conf snippet work, if you rename it to 10-monitor.conf, and put it in /etc/X11/xorg.conf.d ?

I think it's still possible though, by masking some package versions. I had acceleration with r128 some months ago, until I changed the video card for some more RAM.

Legacy support has been dropped in media-libs/mesa-8.0. Masking the deps to the latest that will emerge is a bit more work to find out. This is the last setup I was using:

/etc/portage/package.unmask:
Code:
=media-libs/mesa-7.11.2

/etc/portage/package.mask:
Code:
>=app-admin/eselect-opengl-1.2.6
>=media-libs/mesa-8.0
>=sys-devel/llvm-3.1-r2
>=x11-base/xorg-server-1.13.0
>=x11-proto/glproto-1.4.15-r1

Hi,

I solved by explicitely setting my monitorproperties this way:
Code:

Section "Monitor"
        Identifier   "Monitor0"
        VendorName   "Monitor Vendor"
        ModelName    "Monitor Model"
        Modeline     "1024x768_75.00" 81.80 1024 1080 1192 1360 768 769 772 802 -HSync +Vsync
        Option       "PreferredMode" "1024x768_75.00"
EndSection

The Modeline is relevant I suppose!
