For some time now all links are being opened in links rather than firefox. This happens for links received on email (thunderbird) but also other applications. It seems as if the default browser was set to links. I know there are options for thunderbird to force it to open links in firefox and this will most likely address the problem, however I am wondering what brought on this changes.

I had a look for any eselect options to specify the default browser, but didn't find any. Then I checked my window maker configuration and similarly failed to find anything referring to links.

Any suggestion on how I can get back to having firefox as the default for all applications rather than having to configure each application to use firefox.

Tx

It probably got to do with a recent xdg-utils upgrade: xdg-utils pulls in links (browser); thunderbird use

Cheers

I am not seeing xdg-utils with the "links" use flag

Quote:
emerge -pav xdg-utils

These are the packages that would be merged, in order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild R ] x11-misc/xdg-utils-1.1.0_rc2 USE="perl -doc" 0 kB

I tried searching for any packages which support the links use flag but didn't find any
Code:
equery h links

In the ebuild, it's made a hard dependency, not controlled by an USE flag..

/usr/portage/x11-misc/xdg-utils/xdg-utils-1.1.0_rc2.ebuild:
Code:
|| ( www-client/links www-client/lynx virtual/w3m )"

...one of those 3 packages listed, will be needed.

I noticed links was being pulled in, and I'm not using it.

Any pointers on how to get back to using firefox rather then configuration each application separately.

Yes. Follow above link, and ssuominen's approach should work. There is no setting in Window Maker for file associations, as far as I know.

Commenting out /usr/share/applications/links_-g_%u-links-2.desktop as follows fixed this issue for me.

Code:
#Name=Links
#Type=Application
#Comment=A fast and lightweight web browser running in both graphics and text mo
#Exec=links -g %u
#TryExec=links
#Icon=links
#Categories=Network;WebBrowser;
#MimeType=x-scheme-handler/http;x-scheme-handler/https;
