Hi all!

I am not able to login using xdm (did not yet try another login manager). After typing the username and password and hitting enter, the screen becomes black, and an empty xdm prompt reappears. I think I have found the relevant log entry. From xdm.log:

Quote:
xdm error (pid 2764): Dbus error: Unable to open session: Unable to get information about the calling process
xdm error (pid 2764): console-kit-daemon not running?
xdm error (pid 2764): session start failed
xdm info (pid 2764): sourcing /usr/lib64/X11/xdm/TakeConsole
XIO: fatal IO error 11 (Resource temporarily unavailable) on X server ":0"
after 169 requests (162 known processed) with 0 events remaining.

I have verified that console-kit-daemon is running.

Searching this forum & the web turned up some results, but nothing really helping. Note that this is not a password issue, as I can see from /var/log/messages that pam accepts the credentials. The seemingly best result I found at http://forums.opensuse.org/showthread.php/458222-xdm-login-loop/page2, but I can't figure out what the package "patterns-openSUSE-X11" on Suse does and if there's something similar on gentoo.

I'd be grateful for any help. If there is any more info I should provide, I'd happily do so.

Cheers
Pyrates

Dang. I'm having the same problem. It was running fine and then it just failed two days ago. I can't figure out what triggered it. I've been running xdm as my login manager for 12 years without this kind of problem. I reinstalled all the X packages I could think of, upgraded the kernel, reinstalled xdm, consolekit, dbus, etc.
I would very much appreciate some help.

it seems I have the very same issue with slim right now. Quick hack was to rebuild it without consolekit, you might want to try it. I suppose downgrading consolekit will be better solution. (no, I am not sure it's a problem with consolekit, but i think there was and update 1-2 days ago)

All right, but I'm not sure what this has to do with it.
Code:
 eselect qtgraphicssystem list
Available Qt Graphics Systems:
  [1]   native
  [2]   opengl (experimental)
  [3]   raster (default) *
