I have an mkv file with "dvd" subtitles (separate idx and sub files). I don't have much knowledge about all of this, but I do understand that these subtitles are images, and not text.

I am wondering if it is possible (and if so, how) to mux the subtitles into the mkv file (likely using ffmpeg), preferably so that they can be selected by the user (and not permanently burned in, whether wanted or not).

For the record, they're called VOBSUB -- http://wiki.multimedia.cx/index.php?title=VOBsub

And yah, mkvmerge can suck them right in. :)

Right on both counts. The GUI is 'mmg'.

The whole package is very well maintained (upstream) and stable. You shouldn't have any problems, but post here if you do.
