Hi all,

I am facing a problem with my Gentoo installation I cannot solve. After booting GDM tries to start but obviously the X-server crashes with a "Segmentation fault at 0x00"

See the snippet of the log file:

After the login at the console with my username and password and typing "startx", Gnome 3 starts without any Problems and works for literally days. The problem came up about 4 months ago, before this time the system worked without any problems for almost a year.

One thing I do not understand is, that there seems to be some kind of initialization after GDM tries to start:
Code:

Dec 20 14:15:08 computer_m kernel: fglrx_pci 0000:00:01.0: irq 49 for MSI/MSI-X
Dec 20 14:15:08 computer_m kernel: <6>[fglrx] Firegl kernel thread PID: 3994

Dec 20 14:15:08 computer_m kernel: <6>[fglrx] Reserved FB block: Shared offset:0, size:1000000

Dec 20 14:15:08 computer_m kernel: <6>[fglrx] Reserved FB block: Unshared offset:fc22000, size:3de000
Dec 20 14:15:08 computer_m kernel: <6>[fglrx] Reserved FB block: Unshared offset:1ffee000, size:12000

If you have any ideas, I would be very grateful.

Best regards
Mike

I haven't tried to see if ATI finally fixed their driver, but it appears multiple people are having problems with gdm and fglrx.

For the time being I've been using lightdm instead of gdm, it mostly works - good enough for graphical login.

There is a longer thread about this at https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-p-7623272.html . No resolution yet...

Some guy seems to have found a solution to this problem here: https://oliverchang.github.io/2014/12/22/fixing-linux-amd-catalyst-linux-drivers-gdm/

Interesting and ridiculous!

So it looks like an ATI driver and systemd issue, but due to poor ATI coding it segfaults... Don't know what to blame here... Well obviously it's ATI but I suppose some of the anti-systemd people will claim another reason to not use systemd.
