Hello all,

very recently i have lost the ability to launch any app which runs on X?

The terminal generates "Invalid MIT-MAGIC-COOKIE-1 keyError: couldn't open display :0.0" and no subsequent desktop shortcuts work either.

Subsequently i have temporarily resolved my problem with the use of xhost +. But this provides only a temporary solution and has major security implications?

Therefore im not entirely sure how to set my desktop environment so i have permission to utilise it? I tried removing Xauthority but seems to be regenerated at boot?

any help would be greatly appreciated?

p.s why can i not reclaim a forgotten username? The website seems to be broken if i need to create a new account due to forgetting something as trivial as a username? Have i made a mistake, or have i lost the account forever?

If i remember correctly, was there not a command to prevent the system from writing to a config file? Not entirely sure if this would work but does anyone know whether it would be possible to modify Xauthority to remove the invalid cookie then lock the file from subsequent changes?

Not sure if this would resolve my issue or cause subsequent problems for the remainder of my system?
