I've been meaning to ask this for a long time but I'm probably just lazy. :)

Whenever I try to make a minimal install I end up with ugly windows/text/buttons that look like the right part of this image:

When I add a ton of USE-flags and recompile my world it instead turns into the smooth, pleasant appearance shown on the left side. But what graphics component is actually responsible for the smooth left appearance?

Those nice-looking buttons are using the murrine gtk theme engine. Can tell by the two-tone upper & lower halves.

I have neither gtk-engines-murrine nor murrine-themes installed to produce the left appearance but I suspected it was gtk related. Just adding gtk to my USE-flags in the minimal installation still produces the right appearance though. I'll continue to compare my installations to see if I can figure out what differs between them. Thanks for the pointer to gtk though. :)

Just to conclude this, it is the selected GTK+ theme that controls this difference in visual appearance (especially noticeable on the buttons). What mechanism automatically selects the smoother theme on my more bloated installations is still unknown to me but now that I know how/where to configure this, it's of lesser concern.
