Just the other day my KDE desktop started acting up. Whenever I reboot my desktop gets nuked, or more specifically it gets completely cleared out. The wallpaper reverts to the default one, and all desktop icons disappear. Needless to say, this is a huge pain in the rear end. The only advice I could find by googling was to delete the .kde directory. I tried that, but to no avail.

Any idea as to what could cause this madness?

I can't say much at this time, other than me too!

That is, I believe I have had this happening for some time now (not sure since when... not too long ago, currently at plasma-workspace-4.11.6). I've not really looked into it more, since it's not a huge issue for me (I have nothing on the desktop itself; I only have to change the background image, and move the activity-thingy to the lower right-hand corner as if to hide it).

What I find mostly strange about it, is that in my case, it happens rather randomly. That's the second, and possibly the stronger reason to why I haven't looked into it (can't exactly reproduce it too easily).

That said, I guess it might not be the exact same issue if it is happening for every new session here...

I rather doubt that. I haven't done anything lately that would change them, and the issue popped up rather suddenly. Anyway they directory is owned by me, the user group is also me, and permissions 755. The permissions inside also seem quite normal. 755 for directories, 777 for symlinks and either 644 or 600 for files. Even if the permissions had been the problem, I would assume that deleting the directory and starting from scratch would have cured that, but it didn't. :(

I made a backup of my system a few days ago, so I restored to that backup, and the problem was gone. I'm now in the process of re-tracing the steps I've taken the last few days (taking backups in between) to see which action may have been the triggering factor.

Ok. I finally found the smoking gun. It turns out that the opengl settings are (somehow) to blame.

I recently upgraded my system. My previous one had an nvidia gpu, which I used with the proprietary drivers. Now that AMD has released better Linux drivers I went with a system that has an integrated radeon (Richland) gpu, so I removed the nvidia driver. As the system was new there were still some tweaking to be done, and I noticed that OpenGL was still set to nvidia, so naturally I switched to xorg-x11.
Code:
# eselect opengl list
Available OpenGL implementations:
  [1]   nvidia
  [2]   xorg-x11 *

When retracing the steps of the changes I made the days prior to the bug showing up, this one turned out to be the one that caused the KDE wonkiness.

So, new question: How can I purge the nvidia stuff from my machine without KDE going bonkers?

That certainly seems different from what I'm having, though I am full-timing the nvidia-drivers, which we have in common, and I would not be surprised at all if those were to be blamed in my case.

Either way, it seems I forgot to mention that it might be worth looking into ~/.xsession-errors if you have the file (created by session-managers, I believe; when not using one, I think something like startx &> ~/xsession-log-or-whatever might (not entirely sure) have caught a message about the phenomenon).

As for purging nvidia-drivers, I think unmerging them should suffice, and of course removing them from make.conf if they're mentioned there so as to not have them pulled back in with the next update of xorg-server and friends.
So how did you go about removing the drivers? If the eselect-module still exists after unmerging the drivers, I'm not entirely sure at this time what could or would be the cause of that.

Hi all,

some days ago I had have a similar problem, not saving a new arranged start icon to my menu bar. After every log off log into my kde desktop it was gone.

I solved this case by adjusting one entry into the system settings> start_stop_programs > from save last session settings to start with a new empty session after log in.

Sorry for the remembering not the correct wording, cause I'm not sitting on a kde desktop actually and also I'm using different language settings which increases the level of difficulty.
But I hope you know what I mean.

After accepting my settings, I switched back and everything works fine as it should be.

Hope it works for you too.

Best, Andy.

What filesystem are you using?
You could try: "export KDE_EXTRA_FSYNC=1" and see if this helps.

Tried it, but no luck. Actually it seems that the settings do get saved properly, but for some reason on startup KDE is unable to pick up the old settings, and overwrites them instead.

Code:
emerge -C nvidia-drivers && emerge -av --depclean

The eselect module still existed after that - sort of. It was still selected, but once I switched to xorg-x11, I couldn't switch back, because of missing files (no surprise). Also once I re-emerged virtual/opengl and app-admin/eselect-opengl the option disappeared completely.

Now that file is a big hairy thing. Not sure how to interpret it...

I tried this one too. I fact I tried all the settings there, but plasma seems to completely ignore my choice, and just nuke everything every time. :(

IsmoHaa,

please check if you're affected by this problem too and if yes, change it accordingly.

https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-882895-start-0.html

Best, Andy.

Finally got it (somehow) working in part based on tips from the thread I made on the KDE forums http://forum.kde.org/viewtopic.php?f=67&t=119769 and in part using exorcism. In short what I did was:

1) Switch from OpenGL to XRender
2) Add this script to ~/.kde4/env
Code:
#!/bin/bash
glxinfo &>/dev/null

3) Change wallpapers to desired ones.
4) Log out (NOT reboot)
5) Log back in
6) Reboot
7) Put desired icons on desktops
8) Reboot again (to test) that everything was still in place.

Really a case of WTF!? If I had to bet money on something, I would say that some key package on my system hasn't received the memo that nvidia is gone, despite revdep-rebuild not finding any such thing.

The eselect module still existed after that - sort of. It was still selected, but once I switched to xorg-x11, I couldn't switch back, because of missing files (no surprise). Also once I re-emerged virtual/opengl and app-admin/eselect-opengl the option disappeared completely.

Ah, yes, that makes sense I guess.

For some reason I was thinking/remembering that the eselecting happens automagically.

As for the output, I was hoping something like errors about

Code:
.kde4/share/config/plasma-desktop-appletsrc

or something clearly descriptive like that.

Can't see anything really suspicious (not that I can tell much). The 'TypeError' messages might be the closest, but I guess those might be normal, too.

The exorcism rituals look pretty interesting as well. Something a comment in your thread at KDE made me remember/realise one other thing about my set-up: I always lock the widgets.

I shall try to experiment with it more at some point.
Thanks for sharing!

As a some kind of a conclusion on my part as well, although not at all revealing, whatever was happening to me here stopped from happening after I moved the installation from an HDD to an SSD.

I also noticed that, similarly to this post, every time my background image went away, a new Activity was created. The old one would still be there, working, if I just switched back to it (although it would not be visible at first, restarting KDE after the “empty” run would make it appear in the list of activities; I normally make no use of them, and as such, I did not notice the new ones being created).

Makes me think of some sort of a race-condition...

I don't recall how much I tried removing of the KDE configuration files, similar to this post, but in any case, it has not happened even once after the switch to the SSD.
