Ich setze gerade einen Rechner auf, bei dem das komplette System auf einem RAID-1 liegen soll. Es gibt nur eine Partition. Ich habe /dev/sda1 und /dev/sdb1 zu einem RAID-1 zusammengeschlossen und mit ext4 formatiert.

Mit --metadata=0.90 funkltioniert alles wunderbar, GRUB2 holt den Kernel aus dem RAID und bootet ihn. Der wiederum baut das RAID zusammen und das System fährt normal hoch.

Jetzt habe ich mich gefragt, ob das auch mit der aktuellen Version der Metadaten funktioniert, also habe ich (per grml) die System-Partiton auf eine andere Festplatte gesichert, das RAID ohne Angabe von --metadata, also mit Version 1.2 angelegt, und die Systempartition wieder zurückgespiegelt. Hinterher hab ich natürlich noch GRUB2 entsprechend angepasst, damit die richtige RAID-ID in der Konfiguration drinsteht.

Jetzt ist es so, dass GRUB2 zwar mit dem Metadata-1.2-RAID umgehen kann, und den Kernel holt – der kann aber allerdings scheinbar das RAID nicht zusammenbauen. Zumindest bekomme ich eine Kernel-Panic.

Wie verhält sich das? Hab ich was falsch gemacht? Oder kann man (derzeit?) Ein Metadata-1.2-RAID nicht als / verwenden? Weil GRUB2 hat ja scheinbar kein Problem damit.

Bzw.: Ist es richtig, dass das automatische Zusammenbauen eines RAIDs durch den Kernel als depreceated eingestuft ist (was erklären würde, dass es nur Metadata 0.90 unterstützt), und man prinzipiell eine initrd dafür verwenden sollte?

Also zumindest kann ich das System mit Metadata 1.2 booten, wenn ich ein initramfs in den Kernel baue, das das RAID startet und als Root mountet. Ist ziemlich einfach zu machen, die Anleitung steht unter http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Custom_Initramfs :-)

Ja, das ist richtig, ebenso wird das btrfs zusammenbauen und Co nicht in den Kernel kommen. Die Premisse ist, dass was im Userspace erledigt werden kann soll auch dort erledigt werden.

Alles klar, dann nehm ich einfach das initramfs. Funktioniert ja problemlos :-)
