Okay, I have upgraded to systemd/GNOME 3.8, after being assured that even a 3dfx Voodoo 3 card has enough hardware acceleration to handle it (my card is newer than that, though far from cutting-edge). The login screen works without any problems, much better than GNOME 2's ever did. The desktop, however, is nearly always a complete mess, looking for all the world like it's trying to use a resolution and/or refresh rate much higher than the screen can handle, if I was using a CRT. What's strange is that it's only NEARLY always a mess, sometimes it actually looks just fine, but as soon as I return to the login screen and try to log in as another user, it's almost always back to being a mess.

What should I post for help with this problem? Basic system specs are an AMD Athlon Barton-core with GeForce 4 Ti integrated card and Nouveau display driver. Here are the results of dmesg:

And journalctl -b:

The GL errors, I'm hoping, are being caused by some disagreement between the hardware and software, with the software assuming there are more texture layers than the hardware actually supports. Or, maybe the old card hardware skimped on the one thing GNOME 3.8 requires to successfully render the desktop, though the fact that the desktop sometimes displays just fine makes me think it could work without every time, if only I knew the correct config setting to change.
