I use display size in the monitor definition of xorg.conf. Below are examples for a 42 inch tv and a standard 19inch monitor.
Code: | Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor0"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "Monitor Model"
DisplaySize 820 255
HorizSync 31.5 - 80.0
VertRefresh 35.0 - 75.0
Modeline "1440x900" 106.47 1440 1520 1672 1904 900 901 904 932 -HSync +Vsync
#Modeline "1280x1024" 102.24 1280 1296 1552 1736 1024 1024 1033 1070
Modeline "1024x768" 68.33 1024 1040 1216 1400 768 768 775 802
Modeline "800x600" 41.81 800 816 928 1072 600 600 606 626
EndSection
Section "Monitor"
Identifier "Monitor1"
VendorName "Monitor Vendor"
ModelName "TV"
DisplaySize 930 520
HorizSync 1-200
VertRefresh 1-200
# 1920x1080 @ 50 Hz (EDID) HSync: 56.25 kHz
#ModeLine "1920x1080a" 148.50 1920 2448 2492 2640 1080 1084 1089 1125 +HSync +VSync

I got two screens on my PC and the TV has something like font size 500 if i don't set DPI
try adding something like this to your xorg.conf in your TV section
Code: | Option "DPI" "92 x 91"
