Hi,

emerge always wants to rebuild dev-libs/icu-52.1, thus causing to rebuild many other packages, including app-text/calibre and app-office/libreoffice, which are both quite heavy.
Code:
16:55:46 [root:~]
 # emerge -ptuDN @world
!!! Repository 'pure-funtoo' is missing masters attribute in '/var/lib/layman/pure-funtoo/metadata/layout.conf'
!!! Set 'masters = gentoo' in this file for future compatibility

These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[ebuild  rR    ] net-libs/webkit-gtk-2.0.4
[ebuild  rR    ] app-text/calibre-1.14
[ebuild  rR    ] app-office/libreoffice-4.1.4.2
[nomerge       ] app-emulation/vmware-workstation-10.0.1.1379776-r1
[ebuild  N     ]  app-emulation/vmware-modules-279.1  USE="-pax_kernel"
[ebuild  rR    ] media-libs/libvisio-0.0.30
[ebuild  rR    ] media-libs/libcdr-0.0.14
[ebuild  rR    ] app-text/libmspub-0.0.6
[ebuild  rR    ] media-libs/harfbuzz-0.9.23
[ebuild  rR    ] sys-apps/gptfdisk-0.8.8
[ebuild  rR    ] media-libs/raptor-2.0.9
[ebuild  rR    ] dev-tex/bibtexu-3.71_p20130530
[ebuild  rR    ]  dev-libs/icu-52.1 [52.1]

The following packages are causing rebuilds:

  (dev-libs/icu-52.1::poly-c, ebuild scheduled for merge) causes rebuilds for:
    (sys-apps/gptfdisk-0.8.8::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (net-libs/webkit-gtk-2.0.4::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (app-text/calibre-1.14::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (app-text/libmspub-0.0.6::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (media-libs/harfbuzz-0.9.23::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (media-libs/raptor-2.0.9::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (dev-tex/bibtexu-3.71_p20130530::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (media-libs/libcdr-0.0.14::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (app-office/libreoffice-4.1.4.2::poly-c, ebuild scheduled for merge)
    (media-libs/libvisio-0.0.30::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)

icu isn’t even upgraded, so why the need to rebuild it? I don’t really mind rebuilding esp. libreoffice (i5-3570K, 16GiB DDR3 and builds in RAM), but it’s quite annoying, and I’d like not to bother the SSD all the time.

I am using a different sub-slot of dev-libs/icu than the package in portage. This and a bug in latest portage are the cause of the constant rebuild.
There's a patched portage version in my overlay which fixes this problem. Alternatively you can mask dev-libs/icu from one location:
Code:
echo "dev-libs/icu::poly-c" >> /etc/portage/package.mask

Need a stage1 tarball? (Unofficial builds)

Great, that did the job, thanks!
Code:
These are the packages that would be merged, in reverse order:

Calculating dependencies... done!
[nomerge       ] app-emulation/vmware-workstation-10.0.1.1379776-r1
[ebuild  N     ]  app-emulation/vmware-modules-279.1  USE="-pax_kernel"

Would you like to merge these packages? [Yes/No]
Yes, gotta fix that as well, but that’s another topic, and I actually know what to do. Just too lazy.
But I think I’d better read about subslotting. Portage may be a bit more complex than Arch Linux Package Management, but it‘s worth it (and I‘m just using it since October)
