[SOLVED] Lots of Segmentation Faults

Hi Folks,

since a few days, I got _lots_ of segmentation faults in various programmes. The most obvious happen in Firefox and Thunderbird, but also in emerge, gnome-terminal and (I think) the
gnome shell window manager (metacity?).

Also, I obtain Problems emerging several programmes. For example, curl:

Looks like a problem with pthread, but I struggled to find a solution. Also, I somehow think that might be connected with the segmentation-fault-problem.

Looking forward for hints :-)

The first thing I would do (and maybe you have done already) is run a revdep-rebuild -p to see if there is a linking inconsistency in built libraries. Also, grep revdep out of /var/log/portage/elog/summar.log*

Sometimes updates tell you that you need to update certain library dependencies and if you miss it, you get weird errors down the road.

'revdep-rebuild' says my system is consistent. Grepping for revdep just gives me two results that say I should do it. :/

With regards to the segmentation faults, I would recommend sys-apps/memtest86+ for a time, to see if the problem clearly lies there. It's where most of mine have been lurking at, especially so if the faults are seemingly random'ish, and not for example happening always at the same point of <a thing>.

Ok, I did that for a while. Unfortunately, I am not really confident with this stuff, but I suppose 86k errors are not *that* good:

Nice catch Chiitoo! I usually look at software before hardware, but clearly this is a hardware problem.

Is your RAM still under warranty? If so you can probably RMA it.

Really looks like a hardware problem (RAM). I booted Windows and it first behaved strange, then showed me a blue screen.

Unfortunately my RAM is almost 3 years old, so I probably have to buy new ones.

I can confirm that the problem was a defect RAM stick. Took of the broken one and now I can compile as much as I like :-)
