My monitor has a maxium resolution of 2560x1440.

xrandr's (and as a consequence KDE's) highest suggestion though, is 2560x1600. All lower resolutions then have roughly the same ratio, but none of them fit the actual number of pixels the monitor has.

The result is that whatever resolution I pick, I get large black borders on the left and right side.

While I was reasonably confident with configuring xorg.conf some time ago, it's been years since X/KDE didn't "just work" for me, and if I can get it to identify the right resolutions, that'd be awesome.

Driver:

Code:
VIDEO_CARDS="vmware"

You sure this is happening at KDE level? Do you get the right resolution listed when you type the command
Code:
xrandr

?

You are absolutely right, doesn't happen at the KDE level at all.
I also realized it's perhaps important to note which graphics driver I'm using, which is vmware, and thus this is in a VM.

I've updated the original post and title.

So your virtual video bios is not aware of your physically allowed video modes. As a first fix, you can use xrandr to define a fitting mode line for your situation:

It has been years since I used vmware, so I have no idea what today's versions are capable of... can you in your virtual machine's settings somehow detect your actual video hardware?
