I emerge kde-meta for the first time and it does not start. I typed this command that I saw here in one post : 'X -retro & sleep 5; killall X' - and X is ok.
Here are the last part of kdm.log and xorg.5.log - please advise!

Not entirely sure if this can be the cause for 'kdmgreet' to be crashing, and I'm not too familiar with nouveau, but

does not bode well, methinks.

Which guide(s) have you been following while setting up Xorg and friends?

Here for example is a bit of something regarding modesetting:

Just some quick thoughts~
