I have Ubuntu 13.10 on /dev/sda1, which also contains Grub2
I just installed Gentoo on /dev/sdb1, and installed the kernel is 3.10.25-gentoo

Running 'update-grub' doesn't detect the Gentoo system.
How can I add Gentoo to the existing Grub?

Do you have os-prober installed?
If you do not have it, install it and re-run grub configuration command

install and run os-prober and then update grub in ubuntu if os-prober has found gentoo; I'm thinking: In order for grub-mkconfig to detect your Linux kernel(s), they must be named vmlinuz-version or kernel-version

Merged your second thread since it had a response. Please don't post duplicate threads. Thanks!

Same:

Upgraded linux mint 17

poof gentoo entry gone

typed by reading my second box

os-prober
/dev/sda6:Gentoo Base System release 2.2: and so on

grub-mkconfig

Big wall of text and in section 30_os-prober
found gentoo base system and so on

no boot entry, sigh

I really hate those automated scribts and those noobish ubuntu / mint peeps, they just erased another grub config without backup of the previous File. Are they nuts on deleting a system file without backup? size below 7kb. I am not sure if I added in the custom section or not though.

I will later generate the coresponding entry again, but just annoying such "auto scripts" of htose noobish binary distros. without confirmation or anything, graphical GUI updater of linux mint ruined it in the first place. They just replace that file and thats it

kinda annoying now i get a kernel panic with teh kernel which worked before i updated linux-mint. sigh.
