Hello, i am an archlinux user who is trying to install gentoo for the fist time. my computer has an amd a10 5800 processor, with a radeon hd7600d gpu. it is new, so i only had ubuntu installed in this machine.

in the radeon configuration page (https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon#Firmware) says:

Kernel configuration:
Device Drivers --->
Generic Driver Options --->
-*- Userspace firmware loading support
[*] Include in-kernel firmware blobs in kernel binary
(radeon/<YOUR-MODEL>.bin)
(/lib/firmware) Firmware blobs root directory

i have installed x11-base/xorg-drivers, and radeon-ucode but when i do make menuconfig i cant find
(radeon/<YOUR-MODEL>.bin)
(/lib/firmware) Firmware blobs root directory

under the
[*] Include in-kernel firmware blobs in kernel binary

line.

startx doesnt work, and X -configure neither, so i think i didnt do the confiuration right. but i cant find the place where i have to say to my kernel what my graphics card is.

also my card isnt in the list on radeon page at the wiki. but i think perhaps it has the same drivers as another card.

can someone help me?

excuse my english, its not my native language :P

thanks

I have that option exactly where you stated it should be:
1. make menuconfig
2. go to "Device Drivers" and press enter
3, go to "Generic Driver options and press enter (for me it's the first entry under device drivers
4. Select "Userspace firmware loading support" (is most likely enabled by default)
5. Select "Include in-kernel firmware blobs in kernel binary"
6. Enter (space separated if you need more than one blob) the firmware file, e.g. radeon/<your-model>.bin
7. By now the "Firmware blobs root directory" option should have appeared, enter the path to your firmware directory (/lib/firmware is default).
8. Make sure you have /lib/firmware/radeon/your-model.bin
9. build kernel, install modules and kernel and have some fun...

Disclaimer: Since I don't own a radeon card I can't reproduce everything myself, but I have these options in my kernel anyways...

i have a similar box (A6-APU with Radeon HD 7540D) which i will use in the examples.
first, find out which exact Radeon-model it has:
Code:
medi ~ # lspci
(...)
00:01.0 VGA compatible controller: Advanced Micro Devices, Inc. [AMD/ATI] Trinity [Radeon HD 7540D]
(...)

since you have altrady emerged radeon-firmware, the firmware-files reside in /lib/firmware/radeon/. this is the path and file you have to state in your kernel-config.
find which file belongs to your hardware can be a little bit tricky; good info is here http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Comparison_of_AMD_graphics_processing_units#Southern_Islands_.28HD_7xxx.29_Series and here http://xorg.freedesktop.org/wiki/RadeonFeature/
i found the exact model of my APU-chip in Xorg.0.log
Code:
[    10.223] (--) RADEON(0): Chipset: "ARUBA" (ChipID = 0x9991)

i have had two AMD-APUs where lspci stated a different model than X found - in both cases the model that X found is the one that works.

if you configure your kernel with
Code:
make menuconfig
you have to set the path to the firmware-files under Device Drivers --> Generic driver options --> External Fimware blobs to build into....
(or you put them into your initrd)
Code:
medi ~ # zgrep -iE 'radeon|firm' /proc/config.gz
CONFIG_PREVENT_FIRMWARE_BUILD=y
CONFIG_FIRMWARE_IN_KERNEL=y
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE="radeon/ARUBA_rlc.bin radeon/ARUBA_me.bin radeon/ARUBA_pfp.bin rtl_nic/rtl8168e-3.fw"
CONFIG_EXTRA_FIRMWARE_DIR="/lib/firmware/"
# Altera FPGA firmware download module
# CONFIG_CYPRESS_FIRMWARE is not set
# CONFIG_DRM_LOAD_EDID_FIRMWARE is not set
CONFIG_DRM_RADEON=m
# CONFIG_DRM_RADEON_UMS is not set
# CONFIG_FIRMWARE_EDID is not set
# CONFIG_FB_RADEON is not set
# Firmware Drivers (...)

on this box, if CONFIG_FB_RADEON was set, the system would not boot with KMS.
GRUB passes these args to the kernel for radeon:
Code:

(...) radeon.modeset=1 radeon.audio=1 radeon.dpm=1 radeon.pcie_gen2=1 radeon.msi=1 radeon.fastfb=1 radeon.aspm=1radeon.dynclks=1

GOOD LUCK!

Hello,

I have recently installed Gentoo on my PC and I have 7950 - tahiti.

I gave up trying to use the open source driver as it appeared that radeonsi video card option is masked in mesa. FGLRX works for me.

Did you type in all the different tahiti .bin files into the kernel?

i mistyped my card, it's a radeon hd 7660d. in the wikipedia page says its codename is devastator (thanks DawgG!).

N8Fear: I don't know why but the option isn't there in when i do make menuconfig. i did exactly what you suggested.

Einfield:

no i didnt type the bin files, because i can't find the place where i have to type them :S. i think that's why xorg doesn't work.

i will try first what DawgG suggested:
Quote:

i found the exact model of my APU-chip in Xorg.0.log

and if i can't configure the open source drivers i will try with fglrx. i didn't do very much research about that, but i think by now the open source drivers should be better than fglrx, is that right?

i didn't have time to do it today and i wont be at home for about a week. so it will have to wait until then. but when i come back i will keep on trying (i really want to give gentoo a try).

thanks!

i just checked it, it can be a little tricky.
you have to
Code:
make menuconfig

and there go to Device Drivers --> Generic Driver Options and if you there type sth. into
Code:
()    External firmware blobs to build into the kernel binary (NEW)
a new menu entry will appear below that:
Code:
 (firmware) Firmware blobs root directory (NEW)
an you have to configure it so it (roughly) looks like
Code:
 (file1.bin file2.bin) External firmware blobs to build into the kernel binary
 (/lib/firmware/radeon/) Firmware blobs root directory

this example is from 3.10.7-gentoo and assumes you only need the radeon-firmware in the kernel. (of course you can also edit the kernel-config directly.)
if you are not sure which firmware is right for your box you can use all the files that seem plausible and when you start X the log will tell you exactly which chip it uses (as i said, lspci and manufacturer-codenames can be misleading or wrong.)
if you are not into heavy gaming i strongly recommend against using the fglrx-drivers.
GOOD LUCK!

Thanks again DawgG. I had this line in make menuconfig, but I didn't know that I had to press enter.
Code:
()    External firmware blobs to build into the kernel binary (NEW)

Now I'm almost done. I reistalled everything and I have done the same as you (as suggested in https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Radeon) and discovered that I have to put the bin files for an ARUBA box. All seems to work. But Xorg still doesn't.

When I installed Xorg, following https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Xorg/Configuration, I didn't disable all the drivers, as it says in the page:
Code:
Device Drivers --->
  Graphics support --->
    Support for frame buffer devices --->
    ## (Disable all drivers, including VGA, Intel, nVidia, and ATI)

emerge noted that, and warned me.

startx failed, so i recompiled the kernel whithout any driver for the framebuffer this time, and re emerged xorg-server and xorg-drivers. Rebooted of course. But I still get an error when I do startx, also when I do X -configure.

Here is my /var/log/Xorg.0.log:
