Curious for those people who have migrated from Gnome-2.32 to Gnome-3.8

How much disk space bloat did you encounter?

I'm running up on the edge: I have 2GB free or so on my 32GB SSD and probably will not get a new one till this thing dies from usage, so I hope that the upgrade is disk-neutral...

Or is it?

download 75 megs unpacked my educated guess is 210 mb... thats for gdm3 only... seems like it pulls in quite a bit of gnome3. im writing up

id still purge from the ssd, its over 85% full, thus you're going to encounter maximum fragmentation.

Maybe you can try to run gnome-base/gnome-light and, while compiling, cleanup things like you distfiles, ccache (if you are using it), /var/tmp/portage... to try to ensure you don't run out of space

Hmm.. I do use an external drive to supplement PORTAGE_TMPDIR and portage + distfiles, but I mostly am worried about losing even more disk space to the resultant installed files. I don't keep the external disk around when I'm toting this machine around.

I already localepurged a lot of stuff, so this is pretty minimal as it is. I think my Gentoo install is less than 4GB on this disk and hope to stay that way. Most of the disk space is used for fairly static data, and another 1 GB for the swap/suspend to disk...

I'm not too worried about fragmentation (it's a SSD!) but I don't want to use any more space for Gnome if possible. And it is sad if I have to waste more space for less functionality...
