Whenever I run startx I get the error that "no screens were detected."

I'm running on a laptop with nvidia, I want to say 5300M integrated graphics?

I even tried using the proprietary nvidia drivers, but I may have fucked installing those.

I've tried running X -configure but it just gives me an error message about invalid number of screens.

Hi.

Have you installed x, mesa, nvidia-drivers? which versions? Did you set the kernel right?

Please post the outputs of
Code:
cat /var/log/Xorg.0.log

Which desctop profile do you use? Please post the output of
Code:
eselect profile show

Usually which works the best for myself. Make a new kernel. Boot with that new kernel. set the kernel symlink to the current kernel in use. check with ls -alh /usr/src/linux. emerge nvidia-drivers. Than issue startx.

and http://www.x.org/wiki/FAQErrorMessages/#index3h2
and https://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/NVidia/nvidia-drivers

Please try the things above and report back. The gentoo wiki is a good starting point
