If this isn't such a big issue any more with SSDs and updates (and thus recompiles) for libreoffice and firefox aren't that frequent, why not compile them on disk by setting an alternative for PORTAGE_TMPDIR in /etc/prortage/make.conf when you need it?

Hello
I use SSD (Intel older SSD x25 serie and newer intel 520) with my gentoo on specialized server and desktop
with no problem, i try recently to compil on ram but before i use ssd for the entire normal system
with no problem

after two years have one bad sector on x25 not sure gentoo relevant...

system are very fast and now with systemd that boot in 10 sec...

i'm SSD addict ....
