Cyanogen is now a company, aims to be third major mobile ecosystem
Quote:
We now know why the team has been so busy -- it's quietly been operating as a full-fledged company since April. [...]

For now, Cyanogen is focused on refining its experience. The company's next move will be to release an app that simplifies the currently "horrific" CyanogenMod installation process, Kondik says. The installer should reach the Google Play Store in a few weeks [...]

At present, there are no plans to charge CyanogenMod users. There's a partnership with an unnamed hardware manufacturer in the works, but Cyanogen is otherwise exploring many potential business models.

Looks much like if Linux Mint were to claim it was going to be "the third major desktop OS".

Must be I'm missing something. I don't see much here but a couple of insignificant tweaks to Android.

Tell me that's not it. Tell me it's like GentooAndroid and enables you to whatever you want with your phone.

There's not a lot of information at this point, so we'll have to wait and see. If they put out a reasonably capable and priced phone that isn't locked down like others, then I'm in. "microSD" required.

It's rooting software isn't it? That's all. With eye candy perhaps.

No, you need rooting software to install it I think? It's more like an Android fork or something? A custom ROM.

No, it is an Android fork.
The problem with Android is that, while it's technically open source, you can't just download the sources, compile them and put them on your phone. You still have to port it to the different devices.
So if you want "Open Source Android" you pretty much have to go for one of these "distributions" and CM is the most commonly used.

Cyanogenmod has given my old Xperia Ray a superb 4.1.x ROM with weekly updates while Sony has stopped at 4.0.4

You only need rooting software when you have a locked phone. Sony thankfully at some point made it very easy to unlock theirs, without even voiding warranty.

I've been looking for a decent phone without service for TMobile so I can keep my plan, but I'm not finding many places that seem to sell them. Neither newegg nor amazon seem to have them. The Contract Cabal must be eliminated.

The "growing pains" start to rear their ugly head.

Focal camera app removed from CyanogenMod, launched as standalone beta wrote:
Not everyone is happy with Cyanogen as a company. Guillaume Lesniak, the creator of CyanogenMod's Focal camera app, doesn't like that licensing changes accompanying the new venture would limit his control. Accordingly, he has just removed Focal from CyanogenMod and launched it as a standalone beta.

Has a rotating camera that seems like it could be more cumbersome than useful. And no external storage. Good opportunity for CM though. Hopefully it does well.

Cyanogen grabs $23m, will ship mod-installed N1 smartmobe on Xmas Eve

Interesting. I need a new phone, as mine is a piece of shit. I'll wait for the beta testers (aka "early adopters") to find a few bugs and post some reviews.

I was interested until I saw the rotating camera, then not at all when I saw the lack of storage.

I'm actually not seeing so much appeal in an SDHC slot. It was critical when I had my LG Ally and it's anemic internal storage, but I've never missed it with this 32 GB Galaxy Nexus.

I don't want to be required to use the cloud, and it is IMO easier to transfer data via card. I'm not convinced it adds much cost or size to a device, given how small it is.

Have you seen the app called AirDroid? I don't miss the SD on my Nexus 4.

How many devices do you have in your household that are not Chinese?

I'm not very familiar with many apps. That it is browser based is unfortunate. The main issue is when there is no connectivity, and the lack of expansion.

Three. They are all antiques.

The only surprising part is how long it took.

Cyanogen Inc shutting down CyanogenMod nightly builds and other services, CM will live on as Lineage [Updated]
Quote:
Cyanogen Inc announced the shutdown, which includes the CyanogenMod build service, in a very short blog post, stating:

As part of the ongoing consolidation of Cyanogen, all services and Cyanogen-supported nightly builds will be discontinued no later than 12/31/16. The open source project and source code will remain available for anyone who wants to build CyanogenMod personally.

I'd say I told you so, three years ago, but notageek would probably say I couldn't have come up with that idea myself and must have plagiarized it.

And I've done a complete 180 on SDHC slots since then.

I wish the slot on my phone was externally accessible, but I wouldn't give it up.
