Just got Gentoo installed and working. Installed xorg-server, xterm, xclock, twm, and the nouveau drivers. Executing startx brings up a twm demonstration desktop. Now I am trying to install icewm.
Code:
  CXX      ypixmap.o
Package gdk-pixbuf-xlib-2.0 was not found in the pkg-config search path.
Perhaps you should add the directory containing `gdk-pixbuf-xlib-2.0.pc'
to the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable
No package 'gdk-pixbuf-xlib-2.0' found

I can't find gdk-pixbuf-xlib-2.0 on my system.
Code:
find / -name 'gdk-pixbuf-xlib-2.0.pc'
returns no hits so I don't know what to set the PKG_CONFIG_PATH environment variable to.

It appears that there is a dependency missing from the icewm compile setup.

The emake error message says
Quote:
If you need support, post the output of `emerge --info '=x11-wm/icewm-1.3.7-r1::gentoo'`,
the complete build log and the output of `emerge -pqv '=x11-wm/icewm-1.3.7-r1::gentoo'`.

Here they are:

I use icewm. One of dependencies is x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf. This provides /usr/lib64/pkgconfig/gdk-pixbuf-xlib-2.0.pc. Do you have gdk-pixbuf installed? What does emerge -av icewm show? Normally, portage will show all the packages that will be emerged, including the dependencies.

I have never needed to adjust PKG_CONFIG_PATH or other environment variables. So, please check for the dependency above (alternatively, use 'equery l gdk-pixbuf' if you have gentoolkit installed or use qlist from portage-utils).

Please post oyu findings.

I searched around and found x11-libs/gdk-pixbuf. I installed that and then tried installing icewm again. This time it worked. icewm is now up and running.
So, it appears that icewm needs gdk-pixbuf but it evidently isn't in the dependency list because it should have been picked up and installed automatically. I'll try those commands you mentioned when I get a chance.
