It's phony and stupid all around.

The Genuine Conflict Being Ignored in the Duck Dynasty Debate

Quote:
An evangelical Christian points out that there is, in fact, a tension between orthodox Christianity and homosexuality. Saying otherwise robs American society of an honest debate about how to reconcile sexual tolerance with religious tolerance.

<snip>

Missing in the controversy over A&E’s handling of its golden goose—or duck, rather—is the fact that the real conflict here is not between Robertson and A&E; it is between gay activists and a solid majority of Christians who believe homosexual acts are wrong. Again, Robertson’s views are hardly anomalous. Christians may disagree on the details, but the Bible strongly condemns homosexuality in both the Old and New Testaments; the marriage model of one man and one woman is first given by God in Genesis 2 and reiterated by Jesus in Matthew 19; and in Romans 1 the Apostle Paul denounces homosexuality as a hallmark of a degenerate culture. The point here isn’t that you have to believe any of this, but many Christians do believe it and feel morally bound to believe it.

Instead of acknowledging this tension, however, A&E, GLAAD, and their supporters have responded with disingenuous expressions of shock and horror. And it matters that it's disingenuous, because if they actually acknowledged that there is a genuine conflict between orthodox Christianity and homosexual sex (along with several forms of heterosexual sex) they would have to confront head-on the fact that calling for a boycott or pressuring for Robertson's suspension tells orthodox Christians that their religion is no longer acceptable, and that’s not a very politically correct thing to do. Right now, they are trying to weasel out of it by characterizing Robertson as a backwoods bigot who takes his moral cues from Deliverance rather than from a straightforward reading of the Bible and the historic teachings of the Christian religion.

Good article.

two questions:

why are there huge christian churches who are just fine with homosexuality?

when was the last time you stoned an unruly child?

You're not allowed to point that out. Only non-Christians are evil RoPers.

I think you might be under the false impression that I'm a Christian. I am not. However, to correct one mistake in you analysis, the sections of the Jewish bible that condemn homosexual acts also condemns some sea food, etc. But there is condemnation in the new testament also, and it doesn't condemn sea food. So I suppose it is possible for one to simply follow the new testament and view homosexual acts as immoral and have no problem with sea food (crustaceans specifically iirc).

So if God created Man in his own image, I guess that explains schizophrenia.

US reality star Phil Robertson has been suspended from his TV show following derogatory remarks about homosexuality.

Robertson had been asked to describe sin by GQ magazine, and replied: "Start with homosexual behaviour and just morph out from there."

He went on to paraphrase the Bible, condemning bestiality and adultery.

TV network A&E said it was "extremely disappointed", adding the comments were based on Robertson's "personal beliefs" and "in no way reflect those of A&E".

More than 9m viewers regularly watch reality sitcom Duck Dynasty in the US.

It follows the lives of the Robertson family, a clan with old-fashioned values who live together in Louisiana, running their multi-million family business, Duck Commander - which makes products for duck hunters.

A&E apparently can't say not to a cash cow. Phil will be back after January. They also supposedly aired a "marathon" on the 22nd.

LOL

I'm pretty sure it did. I watched about 5 minutes of an episode just to see what the big deal was. I just can't do redneck, so it's not my type of show.

yeah, but the new testament also talks about leaving everything behind - especially your family, and giving everything away you do not need for survival.

I never understood this concept of mortal angst that one might have if other people live their life not according to the bullshit linear narrative that one bought into.
