|
|
I'm re-installing gentoo on a system which has had many installations of gentoo. The one thing I did different was I'm tryiing systemd as opposed to the RC init system.
I mainly just did it to learn it, but I don't know it that well and I'm not sure how to get my wireless working.
I have the drivers enabled in the kernel, and the firmware in the /lib/firmware directory. I can see the device and enable it with ifconfig.
I'm not sure which service should be started first for networking on systemd. I think wpa_supplicant is starting but it doesn't establish a connection.
I have tried manually configuring wpa_supplicant and installing wicd. It doesn't seem to be able to scan for essid's.
oh, and yes I have verified that the switch is on, and I know the card works b/c if I go back to my old gentoo setup, it works fine.
Any suggestiions? |

Bah...
after doing a bit of research I decided that there were no gains to be had with systemd unless I wanted to run gnome.
I'm going back to what I know.
Thanks anyway. |

boot speed is 1 major gain. with systemd xfce4 loaded & firefox ready to brows was more than 5 seconds faster than windows xp when i was drag racing virtual machines with equal specs.
to get networking i used network manager and had to use a login manager such as xdm / gdm / slim / lightdm to get things to load up properly with systemd. systemd did not like startx when i was testing it.
id go with virtualization until you're ready to break your real system. |

My old system booted in to a prompt or lightweight login manager in 6 seconds. with systemd it took 4.5. but from what I read, by the time you get networking working correctly with systemd, you end up with an even slower boot. |
