Yes, the Russians did build a space station of sorts, although their first one doesn't count since everybody who went there died, and their second one doesn't count because nobody ever reached it before it crashed. The third one only had one of three crews reach it successfully and only managed to stay a matter of days (and that was secretly military mission only). This was followed by Skylab -- a successful and long-term scientific mission lasting six years.
Meanwhile, the Europeans shortened their work weeks, took long lunches and went on the dole, while the U.S. shouldered the burden of their defense and technology R&D. And still, nobody but an American has ever been anywhere but the Earth, and the Spaniards can't even correctly make their one little token part to go along for the ride with us to Mars. If it weren't so tragic because you're supposed to be our allies, it might be humorous. _________________

Saljut 1 was a great success and it was the first manned space station. Just because the crew decided to die after they left the space station means nothing. In any case it deserves the "Mission accomplished!" award.
Compared to the Russian space station programme, the US American space station was only manned for 2.7% of the time (just 171 days). LOL at "a successful and long-term scientific mission lasting six years".
In the meantime, Europeans worked on projects like Arianespace, the first and most successful commercial space endeavour and the greatest enterprise since the colonisation of the third and fourth world (Africa and the Americas). |

Pffft.
How many Spaniards have even been in space? One? And probably just tagging along with the Russians. We have tourists who do that. _________________

The one Spaniard that went to space returned with both hands swollen and bruised. The doctors were perplexed until the descendant of mass murderers explained: "Every time I reached for something, the cosmonauts would slap my hand and scream, 'Nyet! You must touch nothink!'" _________________ The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.

The space bunny quit hopping.
Sorry, wildhorse. Your heroes didn't do so well. This was announced on Opportunity's 10 year anniversary on the surface of Mars.

This is a momentous achievement, though, because it proves that we can launch an object to the moon, land it safely and have it operate successfully, even if for a shorter than expected time period. Who knows what humanity may be able to accomplish, given that we can do this! We might put a man on the moon! Rovers on Mars! We might even launch a probe out passed the heliopause!
@ Old School
I was looking at some photographs of the other rovers on the graph in your article and could not help but laugh at the fact that the Luna 17 has what looked to me like a little chainsaw which I suspect could only serve one purpose (which is to chop down our flag pole).[/runonSentence] _________________ "History began on July 4,1776. TFA | Too bad. But the mission was a success and the untimely end is not a big deal.
Somehow I doubt that they would just drive a vehicle for ten years over the dust. The Chinese will continue with new missions, faster than your government can increase its debt-ceiling.
The greatest extraterrestrial vehicle so far was Lunochod 2. |

Asian efficiency at its best.
I predict the Chinese will launch a Mars mission, and by the time it reaches Mars, China will have collapsed and there will be nobody there capable of monitoring it, kind of like the Russians trying to figure out how to work the old Soviet subs, or the early Greeks trying to figure out who the 'giants' were who must have built the citadel of Mycenae out of impossibly large stones. |

We actually put a little fault into the bunny's design. That is how we control the Chinese. |

'technology R&D'?

In aerospace technology, we are decades ahead (note the 's') of China, and centuries ahead of Spain. _________________

Don't be so hard on Spain.
They will have a regular cultural and scientific awakening when the Muzzies take over again. _________________ The further a society drifts from truth, the more it will hate those who speak it.

What they'll have is another "Inquisition", Taliban-style. At least maybe the Taliban would put a stop to the ridiculous bull-fighting in pink pants. _________________
