|

Ok, so I replaced my motherboard after many woes and decided to re-install Gentoo from scratch (also because Gnome 3 was so broken).
I tried to follow the guide to install gnome but it fails after 'emerge gnome' or 'emerge gnome-light'.
Code: | # emerge gnome
Calculating dependencies... done!
!!! The ebuild selected to satisfy ">=app-misc/tracker-0.16" has unmet requirements.
- app-misc/tracker-0.16.4::gentoo USE="exif flac gif gtk iso jpeg miner-fs mp3 pdf tiff vorbis xml -cue (-eds) -firefox-bookmarks -gsf -gstreamer -iptc -laptop -libsecret -nautilus -networkmanager -playlist -rss -test -thunderbird -upnp-av -xine -xmp -xps"
The following REQUIRED_USE flag constraints are unsatisfied:
exactly-one-of ( gstreamer xine )
The above constraints are a subset of the following complete expression:
exactly-one-of ( gstreamer xine ) cue? ( gstreamer ) upnp-av? ( gstreamer ) !miner-fs? ( !cue !exif !flac !gif !gsf !iptc !iso !jpeg !mp3 !pdf !playlist !tiff !vorbis !xml !xmp !xps )
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-extra-apps-3.8.0-r1[tracker]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome-base/gnome-3.8.0-r1[extras]" [ebuild])
(dependency required by "gnome" [argument]) |
I didn't even know that Gnome 3 was stable... Any ideas on what's happening? I'm using AMD64.

I wish it was that simple. In the past, installing stable gnome was a breeze, but lately it is a nightmare of circular dependencies and blocked packages. Here is what I get after adding gstreamer to the global useflags:
Code: | [nomerge ] gnome-base/gnome-3.8.0-r1:2.0 USE="bluetooth cdr classic cups extras -accessibility -flashback"
[nomerge ] gnome-base/gnome-core-apps-3.8.0:3.0 USE="bluetooth cdr cups"
[nomerge ] gnome-base/gnome-control-center-3.8.6:2 USE="bluetooth colord cups gnome-online-accounts i18n socialweb -debug -kerberos -modemmanager -v4l" INPUT_DEVICES="-wacom"
[nomerge ] net-fs/samba-3.6.20 USE="acl aio client cups fam ldap netapi pam readline server smbclient winbind -addns -ads -avahi -caps -cluster -debug -dmapi -doc -examples -ldb -quota (-selinux) -smbsharemodes -swat -syslog"
[ebuild N ] net-fs/cifs-utils-6.1-r1 USE="acl ads caps caps-ng -creds" 382 kB
[ebuild N ] net-fs/samba-3.6.20 USE="acl aio client cups fam ldap netapi pam readline server smbclient winbind -addns -ads -avahi -caps -cluster -debug -dmapi -doc -examples -ldb -quota (-selinux) -smbsharemodes -swat -syslog" 33,313 kB
[ebuild N ] gnome-base/gnome-3.8.0-r1:2.0 USE="bluetooth cdr classic cups extras -accessibility -flashback" 0 kB
[ebuild N ] gnome-base/gnome-core-apps-3.8.0:3.0 USE="bluetooth cdr cups" 0 kB
[ebuild N ] gnome-base/gnome-control-center-3.8.6:2 USE="bluetooth colord cups gnome-online-accounts i18n socialweb -debug -kerberos -modemmanager -v4l" INPUT_DEVICES="-wacom" 6,566 kB

[ebuild N ] gnome-base/gnome-shell-3.8.4-r1 USE="bluetooth i18n networkmanager (-openrc-force)" PYTHON_TARGETS="python2_7 -python2_6" 1,482 kB
Total: 11 packages (11 new), Size of downloads: 43,789 kB
* Error: circular dependencies:
(net-fs/cifs-utils-6.1-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) depends on
(net-fs/samba-3.6.20::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (buildtime)
(net-fs/cifs-utils-6.1-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) (runtime)
It might be possible to break this cycle
by applying any of the following changes:
- net-fs/samba-3.6.20 (Change USE: -client)
- net-fs/cifs-utils-6.1-r1 (Change USE: -acl)
Note that this change can be reverted, once the package has been installed.
Note that the dependency graph contains a lot of cycles.
Several changes might be required to resolve all cycles.
Temporarily changing some use flag for all packages might be the better option.
!!! Multiple package instances within a single package slot have been pulled
!!! into the dependency graph, resulting in a slot conflict:
dev-libs/openssl:0
(dev-libs/openssl-1.0.1e-r1::gentoo, installed) pulled in by
>=dev-libs/openssl-0.9.6d:0[bindist=] required by (net-misc/openssh-5.9_p1-r4::gentoo, installed)
(dev-libs/openssl-1.0.1e-r1::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge) pulled in by
>=dev-libs/openssl-0.9.8g[-bindist] required by (net-voip/telepathy-gabble-0.16.7::gentoo, ebuild scheduled for merge)
It may be possible to solve this problem by using package.mask to
prevent one of those packages from being selected. However, it is also
possible that conflicting dependencies exist such that they are
impossible to satisfy simultaneously. If such a conflict exists in
the dependencies of two different packages, then those packages can
not be installed simultaneously.
For more information, see MASKED PACKAGES section in the emerge man
page or refer to the Gentoo Handbook.
The following USE changes are necessary to proceed:
(see "package.use" in the portage(5) man page for more details)

Any help? Should I be using a slot like gnome:3 or something?

I remember there is another exactly_one_of gnutls versus openssl
I resolved by abondon gnutls with my experimental Gnome(*)
These I would try before any attempts to Gnome-3.8
cups pulseaudio systemd
escpecially because systemd involves needed options in kernel config.
PS(*): As happy Kde user: What's the fuzz about Gnome?
Is it just a label connected to good feelings in the past? _________________ Lars Ulrich fan just for the name - although Metallica mesmerized me sometimes |

I tried KDE over ten years ago. I didn't like it then. Maybe it has changed a lot since then...? Maybe it's time to try it out again...
