My primary/only monitor is a 40ich LED tv. I'm using gentoo/openbox. When I first fired up Xorg with openbox, all fonts were tiny and unreadable. By adding Xft.dpi:96 to my .Xdefaults file, it made the fonts the proper size, but it still isn't quite right, colored fonts on dark backgrounds are unreadable and blurry (e.g. directories after ls in Eterm). I read about turning on anti-aliasing and some other .Xdefaults stuff but it doesnt seem to work. I also read the wiki on font configuration but it didnt seem to work either. I used subpixel rendering and hinting and it looked like it sort of helped, but still on a black or dark background the colored terminal text is fuzzy and unreadable.

I guess my question is, what is the ideal way to configure nice, readable fonts for a 40 inch screen? I'm using nVidia geforce gtx 650 ti, connected via hdmi.

Maybe it's also the font itself? Terminus is a nice font for terminals. I always use that with urxvt and xft.
