Posted: Tue Dec 03, 2013 1:34 pm Post subject: nVidia 620M with Intel graphics problems [SOLVED] |
|
|
This seems to be quite a common problem, but the solutions I've found don't work on my Fujitsu Lifebook AH532.
It has :
lspci |grep VGA
00:02.0 VGA compatible controller: Intel Corporation 3rd Gen Core processor Graphics Controller (rev 09)
01:00.0 VGA compatible controller: NVIDIA Corporation GF108M [GeForce GT 620M] (rev a1)
and I've tried the forum solutions:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-959568-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-devices+detected+nvidia-start-25.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-968652-start-0-postdays-0-postorder-asc-highlight-.html
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-959252.html
and followed the nVidia guide "Using the NVIDIA Driver as a RandR 1.4 Output Source Provider" at
http://us.download.nvidia.com/XFree86/Linux-x86_64/319.17/README/randr14.html
Tried kernels 3.4.68, 3.9.11 and 3.12.2 with the options for AGP / DRM set as the standard nVidia guide and the above posts
With various settings I've had a blank screen, "Device not found" and EDID errors, then unable to open /dev/dri/card0 (which exists).
I've tried nvidia-driver versions up to 331.20, currently using 325.15.
Current setup is :

I've set compatibility mode for the BIOS, and have used the legacy GRUB bootloader.
There's probably a stupid error I'm making but I've stuck my head into this for so long I may well be missing it now.... any ideas?

Kernel .config file is at:
http://pastebin.com/eWvWgJBH
Will gladly post any more info if required, the only thing apart from me doing something daft I can think of is that I've used compatibility mode for the UEFI BOIS - have just swapped the Win8 disk and installed Gentoo on another 2.5" disk. Windoze starts OK when the disks are swapped back.
Any help greatly appreciated !! |

OK have it working now - though not dug into things to find the exact reason yet.
For anyone else who's run into the exact same issue, this is what happened:
Although X -configure still exits with errors as above :
Number of created screens does not match number of detected devices.
Configuration failed.
I tried copying the generated xorg.conf.new file to /etc/X11/xorg.conf - *without* any editing this time
xdm started OK, so the .xinitrc file isn't being used. nvidia-settings incorrectly shows the display as 1024x768, randr correctly shows it as 1366x768.
Although the X -configure generated file runs with the nvidia drivers, when xorg.conf is deleted the X server uses the vesa drivers.
This is the working xorg.conf - looking at the six screens it's clear why I'd previously tidied it up before copying it over:
