I was reading through some of the descriptions of options in my kernel. when I came across CONFIG_ZONE_DMA. the description is as follows:
Code:

│ DMA memory allocation support allows devices with less than 32-bit        │
│ addressing to allocate within the first 16MB of address space.            │
│ Disable if no such devices will be used.

Does a modern x86_64 system have many devices with less than 32 bet addressing?

Certainly not many!
My 2009 (modern motherboard... used to be modern...) still offers a connector for a floppy drive and a parallel port capable of using dma.
I think that most parallel ports are still implemented on a (pseudo)ISA bus and therefore, can use dma32.

Well since this is a laptop, circa 2009 it does not have a parallel port. So I think you have successfully answered my question. There is probably no need to keep this enabled.
