I saw another post regarding this issue, but it doesn't seem to be quite the same...

I just downgraded to "stable" KDE from 4.11.3 (I'm not sure that any version is truly stable yet), and when finally finishing, I log into KDM and it shows the NVIDIA screen and goes right back to KDM login...

I created a new user, and with that user, this problem doesn't occur...

this is the emerge--info from the new user profile, so it may not contain any useful information...

any ideas?

Code:
papapenguin ~ # emerge --info

Hi papapenguin.

One shot in the dark.

Try it with the hints I gave here:
https://forums.gentoo.org/viewtopic-t-942264-highlight-kwinrc.html

Best, Andy.

thanks Randy Andy, I don't think that's it...mine is a specific loop...

I think it must be something that I didn't set up correctly...in fact, I believe this has happened before, but I can't remember (or find any info on) how to solve it...

...and when I try to enter the ~/.kde4/share folder from Dolphin, I get

Code:
Could not enter folder /home/donald/.kde4/share.

I think it has to do with this...I reluctantly went back to non-stable KDE stuff (4.11.3) and the message regarding KDM is:
Code:
 * Messages for package kde-base/kdm-4.11.3:

 * You have compiled 'kdm' with consolekit support. If you want to use kdm,
 * make sure consolekit daemon is running and started at login time
 *
 * rc-update add consolekit default && /etc/init.d/consolekit start

 * Messages for package kde-base/kdebase-startkde-4.11.3:

 * To enable gpg-agent and/or ssh-agent in KDE sessions,
 * edit /etc/kde/startup/agent-startup.sh and
 * /etc/kde/shutdown/agent-shutdown.sh
 * The name of the session script has changed.
 * If you currently have XSESSION="kde-4.11" in your
 * configuration files, you will need to change it to
 * XSESSION="KDE-4"

my /etc/kde/startup/agent-startup.sh is:
Code:
# Agents startup file
#
# This file is sourced at kde startup, so that
# the environment variables set here are available
# throughout the session.

# Uncomment the following lines to start gpg-agent
# and/or ssh-agent at kde startup.
# If you do so, do not forget to uncomment the respective
# lines in KDEDIR/shutdown/agent-shutdown.sh to
# properly kill the agents when the session ends.

#if [ -x /usr/bin/gpg-agent ]; then
#  eval "$(/usr/bin/gpg-agent --daemon)"
#fi

#if [ -x /usr/bin/ssh-agent ]; then
#  eval "$(/usr/bin/ssh-agent -s)"
#fi

# Uncomment the following lines to start rxvt-unicode which has the ability to
# run multiple terminals in one single process, thus starting up faster and
# saving resources.
# The --opendisplay ensures that the daemon quits when the X server terminates,
# therefore we don't need matching lines in agent-shutdown.sh.

#if [ -x /usr/bin/urxvtd ]; then
#       /usr/bin/urxvtd --opendisplay --fork --quiet
#fi
DISPLAYMANAGER="kdm-4"

do I need to add a line
Code:
XSESSION="KDE-4"

also?

please help...

ok, after
Code:
etc-update

I get this for /etc/kde/startup/agent-startup.sh

#if [ -x /usr/bin/gpg-agent ]; then
#  eval "$(/usr/bin/gpg-agent --daemon)"
#fi

#if [ -x /usr/bin/ssh-agent ]; then
#  eval "$(/usr/bin/ssh-agent -s)"

#if [ -x /usr/bin/urxvtd ]; then
#       /usr/bin/urxvtd --opendisplay --fork --quiet
#fi

should I add the line in the above post?
