Today is the 10th aniversary of my first Gentoo installation. From then to now, I have an unbroken emerge history on that first machine:
Code:
ian2 ~ # genlop -l | head -10
 * sys-apps/portage

     Sun Dec 14 14:12:50 2003 >>> sys-apps/portage-2.0.49-r15
     Sun Dec 14 14:15:07 2003 >>> sys-devel/gettext-0.11.5-r1
     Sun Dec 14 14:15:50 2003 >>> sys-apps/sed-4.0.7
     Sun Dec 14 14:22:53 2003 >>> sys-libs/ncurses-5.3-r2
     Sun Dec 14 14:24:09 2003 >>> sys-apps/texinfo-4.5
     Sun Dec 14 14:33:03 2003 >>> sys-devel/binutils-2.14.90.0.6-r6
     Sun Dec 14 16:04:20 2003 >>> sys-libs/glibc-2.3.2-r3
     Sun Dec 14 16:04:37 2003 >>> sys-libs/zlib-1.1.4-r2

ian2 ~ # genlop -l | tail -10
     Wed Dec 11 08:02:16 2013 >>> media-libs/jpeg-6b-r9
     Wed Dec 11 08:04:05 2013 >>> dev-java/icedtea-bin-6.1.12.7
     Fri Dec 13 21:15:45 2013 >>> dev-util/xdelta-3.0.5
     Fri Dec 13 21:16:08 2013 >>> media-libs/harfbuzz-0.9.23
     Fri Dec 13 21:17:23 2013 >>> x11-libs/pango-1.34.1
     Fri Dec 13 21:17:49 2013 >>> www-plugins/adobe-flash-11.2.202.332
     Fri Dec 13 22:23:40 2013 >>> net-libs/webkit-gtk-2.0.4
     Fri Dec 13 22:30:39 2013 >>> app-office/libreoffice-bin-4.1.3.2-r2
     Sat Dec 14 09:48:47 2013 >>> www-client/firefox-bin-26.0

Of course, not one single bit (literally!) of the original system remains. Case, motherboard, power supply, disks etc all updated or replaced several times. Filestores moved from native to RAID to LVM. But throughout it has been kept up to date with a regular emerge world. If you look at the number of times I've posted here, you can see that I didn't have many problems either.

Thanks you to the Gentoo community for a stable system that is built my way for all that time.
Regards
Ian

ipic,

Congratulations!

I lost my continuity from mid 2002 in April 2009 when I moved from 32 bit to 64 bit hardware.
Like you, my 32 bit hardware changed under the install.

I have considered a rebuild for 64bit, but recently don't feel like I'm missing anything being on 32bit. Perhaps a project for when I retire :)

That actually shows the 10th anniversary of the production of the stage3 tarball you used for your installation. Still, congratz. I'm not far behind you. ;)

I've changed machines a few times, but going by /etc I've had the same Gentoo install since I joined the forums in summer 2002.

For me at least there is no other sane way to do Linux -- thanks to all the developers over the years who've made Gentoo a reality.

I'm greatful to the gentoo developers too. Without gentoo I'd have to make my own GNU/Linux distro to get this amount of flexibility.

I wish I remembered the day. All I can recall I was a Debian user for years, then famd went berserk in my box, ate up all the resources and I was unable to get rid of it, the supercow apt-get always wanted to reinstall it. Digging deeper I found I could create a fake package to satisfy the supercow ... went Gentoo instead ... it was 2004.

I wonder how big is that emerge log. I purge mine every now and then.

ian2 ~ # ls -lh /var/log/emerge.log
-rw-rw---- 1 portage portage 32M Dec 15 02:13 /var/log/emerge.log

I suppose 32M is a bit big :)

For me I am having my first and current Gentoo installation for the last 6 months. No breakage even when I moved to unstable for the last 3 months. Sometimes its just PEBKAC issues.

Not sure I can last as much as the OP but this is my first Linux installation I am able to hold on to for this long in the last 4 years.
