Is there some kind of advantage to gaming under linux? I have never used the OS before. From the little i have read here tonight about some CD with an embedded OS to play America's Army, the idea of maximizing resources sounds like a good idea. If i have a decent computer with alot of ram, would I notice any benefits to using a Linux environment for gaming? Just curious if anyone has done any comparisons of gaming performance between Linux and Windows. If there was some kind of great benefit, I would be tempted to learn Linux. Any advice you can give a laymen would be appreciated. Thank you. |

A well, not really. Gaming is one of the reasons most linux users still have a partition with Windoze. Linux advantages are stability and (especially with gentoo) controllability: you really can control what your machine does (this leads to no worms/virus-related problems, no spyware, no adware). Most games run on a windows-API-emulator called wine or winex (which is comercial) - you can look at their pages to see if your favorite games are supported. With wine you can use games made for windows, but somewhat slower.
OTOH there are game with with a linux version. They have no speed disadvantage. Some of these are all id software games (Quake, RTCW, RTCW:ET ...), Alpha Centauri, Sim City 3000, Americas Army

You can test these without the need to install anything on your HDD. There is also a installable version, of cause.

As you can see here and here, native Linux is slightly faster than Windows and while WineX is slower. This is, however just one example.
