What is the most you or your organization have spent on a single piece of proprietary desktop nix software and or 'free' (*GPL/apache/bsd/mit or other licensed) software where you buy the latest version or special features.
Not including MAC OSX.
Do not include donations that are voluntary.
You may include amounts spent to hire a developer to customize.
It has to be desktop.
Did you run it on Gentoo?
Was it worth it?
Do you still use it and why or why not?
It has to be sold as native *nix (no ebooks, pdf documents, spreadsheet templates, visualization, or net/cloud ware)
(now or in the past; -convert to todays $ or give a date)
I am using USD currency
Happy new year.

Kerbal space program ($20) and world of goo ($20).

Both run perfectly fine on Gentoo and both where worth it. KSP is particularity good, although the price has since gone up.

I never spent a single dollar for desktop Linux software. Fortunately everything I need comes for free! :)

4 March 2004: €8 (incl. shipping), that's about $0.01 - $15, for:

TADAAA
Gentoo Linux 2004.0 !
on 2 cd's.

Was it worth it? Eh... yes! 8)

After that I bought faster Internet.

5 July 2003: €15 (incl. shipping), $15 - $25, for:
RedHat 9.0 on 3 cd's.
Support ended, then I moved to Gentoo (instead of moving to Fedora).

A little over $50 for QCAD Pro. My father-in-law is considering purchasing Intel Parallel Fortran, though, which is over $1k. 8O

For me, "useful" is a lot more important than "free".

50€ for Suse Linux 7.1. That might be about 11 years back and now about 60$.

I suppose Intel Parallel Fortran is what broke the 1k mark?
In 2009 I upgraded from Qcad to Qcad Pro (for work) which I think was $24.
Back in '02 or 03 we (work again) purchased Appgen"My books professional" for $250 that would be the most we spent on a on desktop linux.
Interestingly both are still around.
I just got the new 64bit version of Qcad for about $50, appgen did not last long for some java update reason.

No Autodesk Maya users?

I had a subscription for WineX/Cedega years ago. It worked well for what I needed it for.

As far as I can remember, I only paid for games (some of them I would have before Linux versions became available, in Steam for example, and I ended up having access to the Linux version automagically that way).

I really can't think of anything else. Most of the games I nowadays buy are around 0.80 - 10.00 EUR, as far as I can remember. I don't have a huge library at all, so even if I were to count in all of them, it would not make a lot.

I've only been here since 2010, though, so I haven't really had the need/time yet to know I need something so much that I would pay for it!

So, if we're counting games in, and games that I might have paid for before Linux ports existed for them, I'd probably say they range from 0 to 50 or so EUR each. Having a native Linux version is of course a very big plus, and is getting more popular as of late, fer now at least, but that doesn't really make or break a deal for me, as I'll simply run the application via Wine if need be.

That said, when it comes to games, it's probably more than likely that they exist fot other platforms as well (I can't think of any such game that is not free), so I'm thinking they don't fit here too well.

In any case, yes, I run them on Gentoo, and yes, I feel it was worth it. ^^

I pay for a licence for Sublime Text 3, I spend 90% of my working life inside of a text editor, so to pay $50 or however much my licence was, seemed pretty fair.

You can use it for free as an "evaluation" version, its not strictly free software though, so the amount you pay could be seen by some as a donation.

Bought a few games off Steam. That's it.

99% of everything else I use is FOSS.

I put my vote on the $50 - $100 mark because I am including shrink wrapped Linux distros that I purchased. Namely Redhat 5.2 and Suse ?.? in the 98-02 time frame. I also had a subscription to KRUD until it was discontinued.

In the mid 90's I worked for a guy that had AIX systems and Solaris x86. He paid quite a bit for those systems including support and almost $1000 for one piece of software. I have occasionally purchased Knoppix and other distros on CD/DVD for a few dollars because It was easier than a massive download and burn.

I also only paid for games.

most for a single piece of software: ~50$ for Football Manager 2014 (Steam)
Yes it was worth it, so far I've played 490 hours and counting :P

I have played it on my 2 gentoo laptops (see signature) and on my arch netbook (M575,1GB ram,GMA4500MHD)

Actually I have over 140 games in my steam/desura game libraries
