When I run a program and it's not installed, I get the typical "command not found" error message. Here is an example.
Code:
$ xfe
bash: xfe: command not found

Then I need to find out what package I need to emerge (e.g. "eix xfe"), making sure I'm installing the right package.

Some distros are more helpful in this case. For example,
Code:
$ xfe
The program 'xfe' is currently not installed. You can install it by typing:
sudo apt-get install xfe

Is there a similar feature in Portage? Most Gentoo users are smart enough to figure out what packages they need, but then again, there are people like me who need a little helping hand.
