I read somewhere that xvmc is obsolete. Is that true and the USE flag shouldn't be enabled?

AFAIK enabling xvmc only adds the xvmc video output, for example for mplayer. If you are using nouveau, the xvmc support is currently broken, so you need to wait for stabilisation of mesa-9.2: http://nouveau.freedesktop.org/wiki/VideoAcceleration
