What I encountered quite often was that when I want to copy files to USB thumb drives or hard drives connected via USB to the PC when they are formatted as Fat32 or exFat that certain files just won't get written to the drive. This occurs especially with MP3s. I can't find any logical explanation for that if I want to copy an album and only one MP3 file doesn't make it.

Once I could get around this problem because I forgot to enable some language encodings in the kernel. I just ran into this again with my cell phone as I wanted to copy some music to it. Now I've formatted the card to ext4 and everything works fine and even faster.

But I still would like to know why.

The FAT file systems does not allow a bunch of special characters that the ext systems allows. I've experienced what you explain with files containing question marks or colons for instance (? / : ). I think there are some others as well.

Sounds like a good explanation because the MP3s I wanted to copy had these special characters.
