i upgraded to gentoo-sources-3.13.0-gentoo-r1 from the stable to check a new driver.
made the kernel, installed, all good.
eselected the proper kernel for the symlink. good.

uname -r reports the old kernel! what gives?

Updated your bootloader(grub, lilo, efi, w/e) and rebooted?
