I look for some advise regarding the following setup on my first virtual screen in i3wm, which should be done via config file on startup.

My wish:

********************
lilyterm | xclock
********************
lilyterm
********************

lilyterm, right to it, split horizontally and reduced a bit in size xclock to the right
Below another lilyterm.

Its rather difficult and I don't get the documentation how to set it up.

There are Splitv and splith and resize to do this job but I can't get it to work, probably I miss some of the hint in the documentation: http://i3wm.org/docs/userguide.html#_changing_the_container_layout

well if you want to autostart a lilyterm on the first virtual screen you add this to i3/config file.

Code:
exec --no-startup-id i3-msg 'workspace 1:Shell; exec /usr/bin/lilyterm'

I tried changing the exec line with ; as separator and other tricks but basically it wont succeed to the desired layout.
