I have a fresh install with X, fluxbox, and urxvt. According to rxvt-unicode Wiki (http://wiki.gentoo.org/wiki/Rxvt-unicode), I can add the settings to "~/.Xdefaults" but "~/.Xresources" is preferred.

The problem is, if I put my settings to "~/.Xresources", they are not recognized; putting them to "~/.Xdefaults" always works. I'd like to know why so.

Have you tried running xrdb -load ~/.Xresources ?

You'll probably have to add that command to your startup list.

That did the trick. Thanks.

One thing I noticed is that the settings are preserved even after I reboot the system (and even if I don't load it in "~/.xinitrc"). Do you happen to know where xrdb is storing the settings?

I think this is what happens. My "~/.xinitrc" loads "~/.Xresources".
Code:
~/.xinitrc
    [[ -f ~/.Xresources ]] && xrdb -merge ~/.Xresources
    /usr/bin/startfluxbox

But "~/.xinitrc" is used only when the graphical login automatically starts OR when I issue "startx" from the command line; if I stay in the console without starting X, the settings in "~/.Xresources" are not used.

On the other hand, "~/.Xdefaults" is used no matter how an X program starts, which makes it somewhat inefficient, and perhaps that's why it's not encouraged to use it.

Anyhow, it's clear what to do now. Thanks for taking time to respond.
