I don't recall ever having trouble setting up slim before. but no matter what I do, when slim logs in it loads the xserver but no wm
Here is what I have done after emerging slim.
I added xdm to the default rc
I changed the DISPLAYMANAGER value in /etc/conf.d/xdm
I made a few small changes in slim.conf, mainly just turning off numlock and messing with this section
Code: |
# NOTE: if your system does not have bash you need
# to adjust the command according to your preferred shell,
# i.e. for freebsd use:
login_cmd exec /bin/sh - ~/.xinitrc %session
# login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login ~/.xinitrc %session
# login_cmd exec /bin/bash -login /usr/share/slim/Xsession %session
I have tried the top two options with the same result. in the past I know I used the second
here is my .xinitrc
|
xcompmgr &
eval $(~/.fehbg)
i3
Code: |
I'm sure this is something stupid because I have this same setup on another system, and it works fine |
Any ideas? |

Code: | emerge twm xterm xclock
DISPLAYMANAGER=xdm
XSESSION= twm in /etc/env.d/90xsession
source /etc/profile && env-update
/etc/init.d/xdm stop
startx |
in xterm type xcompmgr. Are any errors dumped to the terminal _________________ The Birth and Growth of Science is the Death and Atrophy of Art -- Unknown

Nope, which is actually surprising because I don't have twm installed. In the past it usually crashed the X server if it didn't have a wm to load.
So in addition to slim I tried lightdm with the exact same problem. I'm using GDM for now which strangely enough works flawlessly.
I'm not a huge fan of GDM but at this rate I may just stick with it to avoid complications. I just can't figure out what is going on. I've set up
Slim on Gentoo half a dozen times and never had this problem. |

Do you get "Failed to execute login command"?
This seems to be an error that was introduced to Slim very recently. I just installed Gentoo on a new machine recently and I had to choose a session with F1 before Slim would log in.
In another thread (about Fluxbox, I think) Cachorro or someone pointed out the solution:
