I'm running across similar problem on a cloud server (only one of my cloud servers is having problems)

I tried some different MAKEOPTS and CFLAGS options.. all result in the same error.

Below is my output from emerge --info

Running out of resources, methinks. Try reducing make instances. You could benefit from defining march, too.

Your problem is not at all similar. OP has a strange configure test failure. You have a resource-induced compilation failure.

[Edit: Neddy, thanks for the split. If anyone is curious, this thread was originally part of gcc compiling fails.]

Well caught Hu,

I've split the thread to minimise confusion.

Thanks everyone. Totally resource related. Didn't see I had a bunch of process running out of control (separate problem). Addressed that, and gcc compiled fine.

Thanks again
